AP: Nobel peace prize jury under investigation

That's simply not true. While Nobel died in 1895 it took some time to sort his will out. Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace were first awarded in 1901.

Alfred Nobel ( listen (help·info)) was born on 21 October 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, into a family of engineers.[5] He was a chemist, engineer, and inventor. In 1894, Nobel purchased the Bofors iron and steel mill, which he made into a major armaments manufacturer. Nobel also invented ballistite, a precursor to many smokeless military explosives, especially the British smokeless powder cordite. Nobel was even involved in a patent infringement lawsuit over cordite. Nobel amassed a fortune during his lifetime, with most of his wealth from his 355 inventions, of which dynamite is the most famous.[6]

In 1888, Nobel was astonished to read his own obituary, titled The merchant of death is dead, in a French newspaper. As it was Alfred's brother Ludvig who had died, the obituary was eight years premature. The article disconcerted Nobel and made him apprehensive about how he would be remembered. This inspired him to change his will.[7] On 10 December 1896, Alfred Nobel died in his villa in San Remo, Italy, from a cerebral haemorrhage. He was 63 years old.[8]

Nobel wrote several wills during his lifetime. The last was written over a year before he died, signed at the Swedish–Norwegian Club in Paris on 27 November 1895.[9][10] To widespread astonishment, Nobel's last will specified that his fortune be used to create a series of prizes for those who confer the "greatest benefit on mankind" in physics, chemistry, peace, physiology or medicine, and literature.[11] Nobel bequeathed 94% of his total assets, 31 million SEK (c. US$186 million, €150 million in 2008), to establish the five Nobel Prizes.[12] Because of scepticism surrounding the will, it was not until 26 April 1897 that it was approved by the Storting in Norway.[13] The executors of Nobel's will, Ragnar Sohlman and Rudolf Lilljequist, formed the Nobel Foundation to take care of Nobel's fortune and organise the award of prizes.[14]

Though Nobel remained unmarried, his biographers note that he had at least three loves. Nobel's first love was in Russia with a girl named Alexandra, who rejected his proposal. In 1876 Austro-Bohemian Countess Bertha Kinsky became Alfred Nobel's secretary. But after only a brief stay she left him to marry her previous lover, Baron Arthur Gundaccar von Suttner. Though her personal contact with Alfred Nobel had been brief, she corresponded with him until his death in 1896, and it is believed that she was a major influence in his decision to include a peace prize among those prizes provided in his will. Bertha von Suttner was awarded the 1905 Nobel Peace prize, 'for her sincere peace activities'.

He was an arms dealer, he was called the Merchant of Death and his love was the one who convinced him to add a Peace prize. If you believe that to be untrue, show your sources.

So? If I rig the BIG LOTTO and then donate my winnings to charity does that make it okay? Somebody DIDN'T win that lotto because I rigged the system.

Are you saying President Obama rigged the Noble Peace Prize vote? If you see the post I was responding to it looked as if the poster was taking a swipe at President Obama for the cash award the Prize brings with it.

I don't think the OP's post meets the rhetoric of your characterization.

He gave no indication, that I can see, that he thinks "this automatically means the award will be taken away". He only reported the story, recognized that formal acknowledgement has been made and opined that it is long overdue.

Actually I see his comment as just that.

Uses

Dynamite is mainly used in the mining, quarrying, construction, and demolition industries, and it has had some historical usage in warfare. However the unstable nature of nitroglycerin, especially if subjected to freezing, has rendered it obsolete for military uses.

Dynamite was and has been a boon for mankind in certain industries.

Actually Alfred Nobel was so distraught reading a newspaper obituary calling him the merchant of death that he rewrote his will to start the prizes. While dynamite has many civilian uses it came as a boon to the military who could use a more stable explosive

In context, Albert Nobel invented dynamite for military purposes. Doesn't matter what it is used for today. Nobel's motivation AT THE TIME is what counts, so I stand by what I said.

This is unequivocally false.

Dynamite - Alfred Nobel and the History of Dynamite

Swedish industrialist, engineer, and inventor, Alfred Nobel built bridges and buildings in Stockholm. His construction work inspired Nobel to research new methods of blasting rock. In 1860, the inventor first started experimenting with nitroglycerine.

Accidental Invention of Dynamite

This inventor is known the world over by the prize that bears his name. His start, however, was anything but glorious. Before achieving international fame, Alfred Nobel was famous for blowing up his own factories. A desire to save his factories, as well as his workers, led Nobel to invent Dynamite.

Interesting comment, I suppose looking BACK at dynamite one would state the above.

However the Nobel Brothers earned the merchant of death moniker before the end of the 19th century, From a contemporary view dynamite was a boon to the military which had few choices for explosives- ALL with drawbacks and safety issues of their own.

Fact- Nobel recoiled from the merchant of death handle and rewrote his will to endow the Peace Prizes.

Fact- In it's day dynamite was THE premier explosive, in and out of military service

Fact- for the most part true dynamite is rarely used as far more modern explosives have made it obsolete...

But back in the day it was the cat's ass

You're confusing dynamite with TNT.

I'm exiting from this thread because it has become too partisan and too absurd.

Oh contraire mon frere, I know the difference between TNT, which in military forms lacks nitroglycerin, and historic dynamite. I also know what explosives were available in the late 1800's. I also know why Alfred created the Nobel Prizes to start after his death.

This isn't a partisan issue, Nobel did create the prize as a result of being labeled the merchant of death. Dynamite was a military break through explosive in a world of black powder, nitroglycerin, guncotton and picric acid.

Your analogy is not remotely similar to what actually happened. Jesus Christ you people escalate the conspiracy theories quickly.

If Obama was undeserving of the award, someone who was didn't receive it. That's the travesty, Obama was elevated to the award for political reasons, not because of his actions or accomplishments which is the criteria on which it is supposed to be given.

The 2009 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to U.S. President Barack Obama "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."[1] The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award on October 9, 2009, citing Obama's promotion of nuclear nonproliferation[2] and a "new climate" in international relations fostered by Obama, especially in reaching out to the Muslim world.[3][4]

The five members of the Nobel Committee
are appointed by the Norwegian Parliament to roughly reflect the party makeup of that body. The 2009 Committee comprised two members of the Norwegian Labor Party, one from the left-wing Socialist Left Party, one from the Conservative Party of Norway and one from the right-wing Progress Party. The chairman of the Committee was Thorbjørn Jagland, former Norwegian Labor Party prime minister and Secretary General of the Council of Europe since September 29, 2009. The panel met six or seven times in 2009, beginning several weeks after the February 1 nomination deadline. The winner was chosen unanimously on October 5.[8] but was initially opposed by the Socialist Left, Conservative and Progress Party members until strongly persuaded by Jagland.[9]

Jagland said "We have not given the prize for what may happen in the future. We are awarding Obama for what he has done in the past year. And we are hoping this may contribute a little bit for what he is trying to do," noting that he hoped the award would assist Obama's foreign policy efforts. Involvement in which can now be proven as early as March 2009. Jagland said the committee was influenced by a speech Obama gave about Islam in Cairo in June 2009, the president's efforts to prevent nuclear proliferation and climate change, and Obama's support for using established international bodies such as the United Nations to pursue foreign policy goals.[10] The New York Times reported that Jagland shrugged off the question of whether "the committee feared being labeled naïve for accepting a young politician’s promises at face value", stating that "no one could deny that 'the international climate' had suddenly improved, and that Mr. Obama was the main reason...'We want to embrace the message that he stands for.'"[8]

Jagland says he (and it was HE through strong arming) did not give the prize for what may happen in the future then contradicts himself several times.
