    Uses

Dynamite is mainly used in the mining, quarrying, construction, and demolition industries, and it has had some historical usage in warfare. However the unstable nature of nitroglycerin, especially if subjected to freezing, has rendered it obsolete for military uses.

Dynamite was and has been a boon for mankind in certain industries.

In context, Albert Nobel invented dynamite for military purposes. Doesn't matter what it is used for today. Nobel's motivation AT THE TIME is what counts, so I stand by what I said.

And you are correct. Nobel made his vast fortune in arms dealing. The prizes all revolved around that (that's why no Mathematics prize). The peace prize was his secretary/first love/girlfriend's idea to "reform his legacy". His nickname while living was The Merchant of Death.

That's simply not true. While Nobel died in 1895 it took some time to sort his will out. Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace were first awarded in 1901.

And BTW, the phrase "Merchant of Death" was coined by a French Newspaper in 1888 when it credited the death of his brother to him.

But as usual, the French were just Jealous Jennies. But it was the publication of that article that concerned Nobel on how his legacy would be viewed by history...consequently, the Nobel Prizes.

Funny how unintended consequences work out.

Alfred Nobel ( listen (help·info)) was born on 21 October 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, into a family of engineers.[5] He was a chemist, engineer, and inventor. In 1894, Nobel purchased the Bofors iron and steel mill, which he made into a major armaments manufacturer. Nobel also invented ballistite, a precursor to many smokeless military explosives, especially the British smokeless powder cordite. Nobel was even involved in a patent infringement lawsuit over cordite. Nobel amassed a fortune during his lifetime, with most of his wealth from his 355 inventions, of which dynamite is the most famous.[6]

In 1888, Nobel was astonished to read his own obituary, titled The merchant of death is dead, in a French newspaper. As it was Alfred's brother Ludvig who had died, the obituary was eight years premature. The article disconcerted Nobel and made him apprehensive about how he would be remembered. This inspired him to change his will.[7] On 10 December 1896, Alfred Nobel died in his villa in San Remo, Italy, from a cerebral haemorrhage. He was 63 years old.[8]

Nobel wrote several wills during his lifetime. The last was written over a year before he died, signed at the Swedish–Norwegian Club in Paris on 27 November 1895.[9][10] To widespread astonishment, Nobel's last will specified that his fortune be used to create a series of prizes for those who confer the "greatest benefit on mankind" in physics, chemistry, peace, physiology or medicine, and literature.[11] Nobel bequeathed 94% of his total assets, 31 million SEK (c. US$186 million, €150 million in 2008), to establish the five Nobel Prizes.[12] Because of scepticism surrounding the will, it was not until 26 April 1897 that it was approved by the Storting in Norway.[13] The executors of Nobel's will, Ragnar Sohlman and Rudolf Lilljequist, formed the Nobel Foundation to take care of Nobel's fortune and organise the award of prizes.[14]

    Source
Though Nobel remained unmarried, his biographers note that he had at least three loves. Nobel's first love was in Russia with a girl named Alexandra, who rejected his proposal. In 1876 Austro-Bohemian Countess Bertha Kinsky became Alfred Nobel's secretary. But after only a brief stay she left him to marry her previous lover, Baron Arthur Gundaccar von Suttner. Though her personal contact with Alfred Nobel had been brief, she corresponded with him until his death in 1896, and it is believed that she was a major influence in his decision to include a peace prize among those prizes provided in his will. Bertha von Suttner was awarded the 1905 Nobel Peace prize, 'for her sincere peace activities'.

He was an arms dealer, he was called the Merchant of Death and his love was the one who convinced him to add a Peace prize. If you believe that to be untrue, show your sources.

Are you saying President Obama rigged the Noble Peace Prize vote? If you see the post I was responding to it looked as if the poster was taking a swipe at President Obama for the cash award the Prize brings with it.

Actually I see his comment as just that.

Actually Alfred Nobel was so distraught reading a newspaper obituary calling him the merchant of death that he rewrote his will to start the prizes. While dynamite has many civilian uses it came as a boon to the military who could use a more stable explosive
