The federal government borrowed 46 cents of every dollar it has spent so far in fiscal year 2013, which began Oct. 1, according to the latest data the Congressional Budget Office released Friday.

The government notched a $172 billion deficit in November, and is already nearly $300 billion in the hole through the first two months of fiscal year 2013, underscoring just how deep the government’s budget problems are...

Higher spending on mandatory items such as Social Security, Medicare and interest on the debt led the way in boosting spending compared with the previous year, which also highlights the trouble spots Congress and President Obama are struggling to grapple with.

Spending is the problem.

The Marx School of PONZI Schemes is the problem.

Parasite Nation is the problem.

Denying reality is the problem.

Ignorance is the problem.

Hail to Parasite Nation... Hail!

Although I agree with you about what the problems are, I think the other side might take the thread more seriously if you drop the "hail to parasite nation" kind of stuff and described the issues in more detail.

Although we've always had debt, Obama has taken it into overdrive and there is no one to stop him. The establishment of both parties do not want to stop spending no matter what they say. Government grows every day and the private sector shrinks.

Not just Obama - we can thank the senate for the choking defense bill that they just passed.

There is enough spending shame for everyone in DC.

It's like being a passenger in a 747 headed for the ground, and watching the pilot on the left blame the pilot on the right, and vice versa, while neither one does anything to pull the nose back up.

The bottom line is the federal government is dysfunctional.

I just love how the knee jerk, go to response from some is always defense....Of course never given by these people are specifics as to what, or how far they would cut out of it, nor what possible ramifications there would be stemming from their cuts. Nor is there any realism thought of in terms of cutting defense won't solve the problems we have, just like the tax hike on the top 2% won't fix it either....We need to bring entitlements in to the discussion, and not the retirees crap, or hard pressed people with disabilities that actually may need the aid, but the waste, fraud, and abuse in that system if we are to solve this....

Yep, and it will get worse....Thanks to those that voted for the divider n chief, as well as Libertarian contrarians that must rather hear their own voices bitch rather than do something for the good of the nation, we give a collective talk to the hand.

Nooooo they won't... they're in denial and need to be reminded at every turn of what faction they've cast their lot.

You see...logic doesn't work with most... the last two presidential elections proved that, and their posts reveal it too. Perhaps a verbal slap in the face, something so raw and blatant might wake a few of them up... and have them think about the Parasite Nation they endorse and foment.

Libertarian contrarians? Oh, yes, there are a lot of those in Congress ,um.. hmmm. It's a wonder anything ever gets done with those guys all over Washington DC.

But the president just released a stunning new bipartisan plan to solve the spending crisis with....a slight increase in the tax rate for the wealthy coupled with.....0 reduction in spending.

The Obama administration has cemented this centrist as a permanent Republican...and don't get me started on their mental problems.

It is not a knee jerk response.

The fed needs to cut spending across the board, on everything.

Given that, which is reasonable, the senate sailed a defense bill right through.

I would support a 30% cut across ALL government spending.

The defense budget cannot escape any financial scrutiny.

Exactly.
Government spending has to be cut, with no sacred cows or partisan rants to protect a favorite program, and no games about how only raising spending 10% when we were going to raise it by 20% is a 10% cut.
And some things need to be cut altogether, snip snip, gone. The military is not one of those things, of course, as the country still does have enemies, but we don't have to continue to be the world's cop.

Who do you suppose would fill that void?, and what kind of world would we be looking at then?

Good luck with that...You couldn't get that past anyone in congress.

Can't disagree. But it is important to also add that the citizenry is a combination of complicit and irresponsibly ignorant. It does seem the reality of the situation has completely escaped the attention of the masses.

Watched Simpson and Bowles on Face the Nation this morning. They seem to be the only sane voices in the conversation. It was refreshing listening to them speak....

Government of, by, and for the people doesn't work if the people aren't paying attention.

Fill what void? The void left by the government being pared back to what it was a decade ago?

Who filled the void then?

One that was fiscally responsible.

Fiscally responsible? We expect our representatives to be fiscally responsible? What's next, expecting them to put the country ahead of party? To actually work on solving the problems we face as a nation?

OMG! Were they do do so, our government would cease to be dysfunctional, and what fun would that be?

Hell, I would be thrilled if they just put country ahead of self.........
