Is Stephen Colbert running for the U.S. Senate?

A new Twitter account -- @ColbertforSC -- was launched after GOP Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina announced he will resign to become president of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank.
A spokeswoman for Colbert did not directly say whether the comedian and political satirist is running the account.
"Stephen is honored by the groundswell of support from the Palmetto State and looks forward to Governor Haley's call," Carrie Byalick, a Colbert spokeswoman, said in an e-mail.

The first tweet from @ColbertforSC said: "Reporting for duty, South Carolina!" and there is a link to a Colbert for Senate website that doesn't exist yet.

So is he serious? Or is it another satire piece on how screwed up our electoral system is?

Both if. If he's taken seriously, just how ****ed up is our senate?

If he's not, no big deal, he can still make fun of how ****ed up our electoral process is.

The court jester does not belong in the leading hierarchy of the court. He is supposed to make fun of the king and the courtsmen... not be one of them.

The requirements for running for Senate are that you must be at least 30 years old, be a U.S. citizen for at least nine years at the time of election to the Senate, and must be a resident of the state one is elected to represent in the Senate. Court jesters may still serve in the Senate.

Yes well. I was discussing on mere principles of where one must be in life.

I am fully aware, and a subscriber in fact that:
    -The problem with political jokes is that they get elected ;

Translated ofc, in the correct adjustements to fit Congress.

As court jesters go, we could do far worse than Stephen Colbert. I watch his show and I can tell you the guy is brilliant.

I too watch the Colbert report. Though the scripts are brilliant and the way he delivers his show is worthy of applause... it is not his work alone. He has an "army" of creative thinkers behind him who manage every aspect of his show.

I do not think comedians should be part of the legislative process though sadly, and I think you can agree with me here, most of the congressmen today are jokes. :P Poorly written ones too.

You can tell a person's intelligence by how they can think on their feet. An idiot can only be helped so much by an army of creative thinkers.

I don't think what a person does for a living should be counted against him when considering a run for public office. All that's important is if they're smart and have motives that are in the best interests of the country. People come from the "correct" backgrounds and fail miserably in public office all the time.

If his job has rendered him unqualified for public office that will come out super early in the election campaign.

That is a way to measure intelligence, another is the ability to solve problems or receive information and analyze it. There are many ways to identify and quantify intelligence.

    true
Absolutely correct as well. Only Stephen Colbert (and the people who know him) can know if he has administrative smarts.
