One of the greatest composers to ever grace a stage. His music was a fusion of jazz and classical, and he is the only composer in history who could take a chorale by Bach and set it to jazz. His music was in very non-traditional times. Take 5 was in tocatta time (5/4), and Blue Rhondo a la Turk was in 9/8 time. This was truly innovative at a time when no jazz group played outside of traditional 3/4, 4/4, or occasional 6/8 times.HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Jazz composer and pianist Dave Brubeck, whose pioneering style in pieces such as "Take Five" caught listeners' ears with exotic, challenging rhythms, has died. He was 91.
Brubeck died Wednesday morning of heart failure after being stricken while on his way to a cardiology appointment with his son Darius, said his manager Russell Gloyd. Brubeck would have turned 92 on Thursday.
