The corollary, of course, is that Republican leaders say there won't be a deal if there are cuts to military spending, or if taxes are raised on the wealthy. All of these hardline positions need to go. We need to gain more tax revenue from whatever sources have more to spare, and we need to stop spending money in places we don't need to be. And we need to streamline our current systems to avoid waste and abuse. We need to do ALL of these things, not some of them.

When the GOP comes up with specifics then I think Obama should listen. And that goes for Obama also coming to terms that spending cuts with the Dems sacred cows need to happen.
AUSTAN GOOLSBEE: I think the world vests too much power, certainly in the president, probably in Washington in general for its influence on the economy, because most all of the economy has nothing to do with the government.
