I can't help but think the same thing about Mubarek and Egypt. Did Obama really think the Muslim Brotherhood were any other way than how they've been? If so, he's more gullible than I thought.
The difference being Mubarak was pushed out overwhelmingly due to pressures from the Egyptian people with the backing of the international community at large, and the democratic movement that was sweeping the region as a whole. Incomparable really.

How many troops did we lose in taking out Mubarak again? You know, sometimes **** happens. The Egyptian revolution was going to take place without any involvement from us. Of course, we could have poured thousands of troops into Egypt and slaughtered those demanding his ouster. Apparently that's what the chicken hawk neo-cons wanted.

Look, there are a lot of people who hate Obama so much they're willing and anxious to blame him for everything that, in their eyes, goes wrong in the world. They're the folks who like nothing better than getting us involved in other people's revolutions - generally on the wrong side.

The MB stand for a lot of things besides Islamism. Most Egyptians care about jobs and ending corruption. The MB built its platform on both. Under Mubarak the MB was probably the best organized political movement outside of the government. They built hospitals and schools, led unions, and provided many services to the poor that the government did not. Since the revolution, the MB has tried to show itself as the most moderate Islamist party, promising relative equality for women and religious minorities, and focusing on creating a more pluralistic state than the military did. It also didn't hurt that the liberal parties were badly divided and squabbling.

Obviously, they were no liberals, and their rise troubled me, and should have troubled anyone interested in personal liberty. But my hope was that they wouldn't overplay their hand. Even now, Morsi's power grab seems to be borne out of frustration with much of the old elite remaining in power, not some desire to emulate the Taliban. Yeah, Islamists suck, and Morsi's a dick, but Egyptian politics are pretty complex.

Obama is largely irrelevant to this whole thing. Obama supported Mubarak until it became apparent that he was getting kicked out sooner rather than later. The administration had nothing to do with the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood. Not everything in the world is our doing.
Don't you know that, to the right wing zealots, everything bad that happens in the world is Obama's fault?

A word of support for an orderly transition from the POTUS carries as much weight as "Mubarak must go" and costs zero lives. A word of support for the military in Egypt to help stand up a more moderate government might have helped too. Wonder what all those CIA agents were doing in Benghazi with weapons depots? Hummm......

So in your world, all it would have taken was for Obama to say to the protesters 'Hey, stop that you guys!' and the revolution would have ceased, whereupon Mubarak would have willingly surrendered power to the 'moderates' (whatever the hell they are) in Egypt?

    You actually believe that?

The Egyptian Revolution was inevitable, and like all Revolutions, was led by the radicals.

    Re: Morsi Leaves Palace!!!

So democracy is alive and well in Egypt and it didn't cost us $3T and a civil war like it did in Iraq, and somehow, conservatives think this is a bad thing.

That's why nobody takes conservatives seriously anymore.

Real democracy is tumultuous and it will take time to take root in Egypt (after decades of the US supporting a dictator). Looks like Obama has done everything right so far. Thank God Romney or Bush aren't in office -- they'd invade Venezuela on the pretext that the Muslim brotherhood has WMD there.
