Teacher suspended for playing song about being gay

Anything less than full-throated condemnation of homosexuality as being EVIL and whatnot is brainwashing.

The opposite has been stated as unquestionable fact.

I think 8th graders can deal with the fact that some people are gay. My son's in 4th grade and he gets it.

I agree that the line on religious expression has been drawn too broadly. While I don't like the idea of mandatory prayers to Jesus, I think a moment to allow private prayer to the student's god of choice is fine. I also have no real problem with having a Bible Study club as long as it's voluntary.

I see, so since you say that your 4th grade son gets it, everyone who has an issue with it is an idiot, immature or is biased?

If I told you I love you then would that make me gay?:giggling: :iloveyou:

No, I'm saying that by 8th Grade, most kids pretty much understand that there are gay people. They may not like that, but the idea that gay people exist shouldn't be news to them.

When is this ridiculous PC era going to end?

Exactly. The opinion didn't fit with one student's idea of acceptable, so the teacher is suspended.

So all you guys who are all about personal freedoms and the Bill of Rights think she got a raw deal, right?

The classroom isn't a teacher's personal platform to espousr her political beliefs. The objective is to teach kids how to think, not what to think. As long as they're on my nickel, anyway.

Based on what little I have read about it, yes.

My statement was more about PC crap I general.

Before you answer, keep in mind my interest in this thread is minimal at best.

It wasn't the teacher that played the song. If you read the article, you'd know that a student asked permission to play the song. After making sure that it wasn't violent or explicit, she allowed it. One student played it, another student objected, and the teacher is the one who paid the price.

I assume you have no issue with this teacher's suspension then:

You're damn right I don't have a problem with it.

Unless she violated a very clear and widely-distributed school policy, then she should not have been suspended and may in fact have a cause of action against the school itself.

Frankly, I don't like Catholics. Neither did most of America's Founders, except maybe the Maryland delegation, or its WASP establishment until the 1950s. They were right.

Im catholic and I dont like you...

The teacher shouldn't be suspended and the world needs to realize you don't have a right to not be offended. This happens all the time when teachers have any kind of Christian material and we see it when kids try to express faith as well. This issue isn't much different.

People are up in arms over a gay song that has no business in school anymore than a pro catholic song should be allowed in school....kids are suspended for wearing innocuous t shirts to school....this is another classic...if its GAY ITS GOT TO BE OK...bs to that...I dont know if the teacher should have been suspended or not..but she should not have played that song, just like she shouldnt play religious songs and she should get some sort of discipline for it and told not to do it again...even if its a letter of reprimand...
Being offended isnt just for certain small groups...if your going to we cant offend people route over the smallest of things...like a T shirt with a cross...than you damn sure cant play songs about being gay and/or finding jesus....either stop this crap for everyone...or make this crap for everyone...not just pick and choose..Oh we want this so its good We dont want that because its bad...all or nothing...

While I certainly don't find the song offensive, it does have some religious and partisan messages that make it inappropriate for public school students without parental consent. Suspension is overkill though.

Freedom of Speech issue?

Well I suppose if she played a song about loving Jesus she would have been crucified by the progressives and atheists....

I'm tired of the First Amendment being trivialized.... I suppose I wouldn't have a problem with the song just as long as there was an objective Jesus song...

It was wrong because the teacher was brainwashing her students with her values - and that is not right - that is not her position. Teachers shouldn't be teaching their politics in the classroom - at least not to kids....

Oh and what the hell does sexuality have to do with art when you're dealing with kids?

When is the transsexual rap song coming out?

Isn't sexuality a private thing when you're twelve-teen? What the hell is a matter with these teachers??

It's like these progressives are obsessed with the sexuality of children.....

The song isn't really about "being gay". it's loaded down with tons of political/religious garbage. Right or left, anyone with an ounce of common sense knows the song was inappropriate. Severity of punishment is more a matter of taste, I suppose. I wouldn't have suspended here, but i would have given her a major warning that anything similar in the future and you are out of a job and i'll make sure all your future employers know about you inability to properly function as a teacher.

The homosexual assault on American school children will NOT stop, anymore than they will stop trying to get into the boy scouts. They want access to children. Send your children to public schools at your own risk. To think the homosexual pathology consists entirely and exclusively of "different but equal" sexual practices is extremely naive. That is why no objective research has been done on the homosexual pathology since 1973. Any researcher who tried that would get fired faster than a researcher applying for a grant to study racial differences in IQs.

Sounds like brain washing. In another thread brain washing kids isn't ok and should be denounced by the government.

You do realize that your comparison of the two issues is utterly ridiculous and has no basis in reality.

There is no need to research homosexuality as a pathology, since it has been demonstrated conclusively that it is not. It would be like research heterosexuality to determine whether IT is a pathology. Get some education on this issue before you speak about it, please.

I love Macklemore. Been one of my favorites for a couple years now.

I pretty much agree with the message of his song, and personally I'd be fine if they played it in school. If another one of the students had wanted to play some christian song, I'd be fine with that too.

What a ridiculous thing to suspend the teacher for, particularly when it was a student who brought the song in and wanted it played in the first place.

Being accepting of homosexuality does not make you pro-gay anymore than being accepting of people who smoke makes you a smoker or pro-cigarretes. It makes you: accepting. You know, your posts on gay issues keep getting more and more tainted with homophobic venom. Gay men wear panties, it's not 'okay to be gay' and dozens of others such great hits. Good luck with that in your personal life.

PS: Don't hide behind the catholic church to justify your homophobia. It makes you look incredibly dishonest.

If the teacher had played it for herself, it wouldn't have been okay. However, since it was for a student's project, I don't see the issue. Students should be able to express opinions that offend others.
