U.N. to Seek Control of the Internet | The Weekly Standard

Next week the United Nations' International Telecommunications Union will meet in Dubai to figure out how to control the Internet. Representatives from 193 nations will attend the nearly two week long meeting, according to news reports.

"Next week the ITU holds a negotiating conference in Dubai, and past months have brought many leaks of proposals for a new treaty. U.S. congressional resolutions and much of the commentary, including in this column, have focused on proposals by authoritarian governments to censor the Internet. Just as objectionable are proposals that ignore how the Internet works, threatening its smooth and open operations," reports the Wall Street Journal.

"Having the Internet rewired by bureaucrats would be like handing a Stradivarius to a gorilla. The Internet is made up of 40,000 networks that interconnect among 425,000 global routes, cheaply and efficiently delivering messages and other digital content among more than two billion people around the world, with some 500,000 new users a day.
The US should never relinquish control of the Internet. The Internet has flourished on US leadership, and it's not worth the chance of screwing it up. This is way too important to let the UN just willy-nilly take over.

But the UN has ended war, famine, human rights violations, fixed the climate and they certainly know how to run many other things as well. :)

What are you joking?

& they have blue hats that they give to soldiers.

People forget that.

Blue hat makers have feelings too.

So do any of you have any comment on any particular proposal or is this just a general "UN IS BAD" rant?

I, for one, welcome our interdimensional shapeshifting lizard overlords.

Yes they appear almost lifelike don't they. I have trouble with the dialect though. To much slurping

The Internet is so incredibly beneficial to the world and poses no threat, the UN wouldn't compromise that.

The UN does not want to take control of the Internet... most countries want the US to loose control because of its abuse of the system time and time again. The obvious place to put such control is the UN, most likely in an organisation under the UN... like UNESCO and WHO and WTO.

A couple countries are supporting strict controls that nobody else supports. Apparently this translates to UN TRYIN TO BREAK MY INTERNETS.

Do you think it's proper for the US to be able to prevent a German citizen from accessing a German website while in Germany?

What? A Rupert Murdoch organization misleading people? Say it ain't so!

Yes, because we are 'Merica gosh darn-it. If it were not for Al Gore inventing the thing, it would be much more difficult to illegally download the songs that Tipper Gore wanted banned.

Give control to those incompetent baffoons? :lamo

Better than to the incompetent fools that are running it now. The very fact that the US justice police seize domains for websites that are not only situated in other countries but are not even in English, shows how bad the system is.

Not even in English, huh?

That should really throw everyone off the trail.

"Set up and agree to some international regulations with the UN" is not the same as "give control to the UN."
