Voting For Obama Keeps Families Away From Each Other For Thanksgiving

That's what people are supposed to do now. Pick one of two sides and hate the other. It's the Obama way and a majority of people just voted for this to be the new America.

It is the way of both sides.

This is just plain stupid. Why in the world would anyone let politics slither in and destroy their relationship with members of their own family? I guess some people have become so jaded, that they figure it's worth drawing those lines.

I'd imagine this is neither the first election nor the last that will be an excuse for dysfunctional families to stay apart on the holidays. I think, though, that Facebook has given many of these people a heads-up and a head-start. Ha!

the mental processes around political identity seem to be so visceral that they have the potential to trump friendship or even blood relation. I'm not sure if this is genetic or programmed, but my guess is that it's a little of both.

I think this particular election drew battles lines between the 47% and the rest of us. And that was no accident.

Facebook... what a wonderful, yet potentially terrible at the same time, phenomenon.

every election since the 1990s has gotten worse and worse. the result of hyperpartisanship speaks for itself.

Yeah, Facebook has made for an interesting dynamic. I am very vocal on my Facebook about my political and religious opinions. As a result, family no longer bring those subjects up with me at get togethers. I enjoy debating, but most of them don't like talking about contentious subjects unless it is with people who agree with them.

For some reason we have always never discussed politics on Thanksgiving or Christmas; the subjects have always strayed from that. When done with dinner we would all go to the television and watch football or basketball.

The rest of us? Who is the "rest of us"?

Maybe the 53% of the nation that Mitt Romney wanted to help even more while forgetting about the other 47%

If that is true then I don't see the problem with Romney doing that. Isn't the President of the US suppose to help the majority of the people in this country? As ole' Abe Lincoln state: "You can please some people some of the time but you cannot please all of the people all of the time"

That's the way things should be, IMHO.

No matter who anyone voted for, my family would be apart for Thanksgiving. My husband was stationed in Bahrain last month for a 1 year unaccompanied tour.

I think many on here are being just as bad as those who would actually allow an election to influence whether they spend the holiday with their family or not. I saw a lot of comments about political sides and only a few about how stupid it is to pick politics over family.

My family includes several Christians, a couple of Buddhists, and an agnostic or two. Several are die-hard conservatives, a couple are die-hard liberals, several more are independents.

We got together for Thanksgiving and we gave thanks, enjoyed each others company, ate well and had no arguments.

Family > politics.

They can already help themselves, why ignore the people that cannot?

Are they really being ignored? You mean you want more entitlements, and free stuff. I think Romney wanted to put them to work, but to many that's a bad thing. Work, I don't don't do that?

I avoided Thanksgiving this year because I knew all I would hear about was the Evil Emporer Obama. My family is...I am not sure what to call them but as far right as I can imagine and fundamentalist Christian. Plus my sister believes in all those conspiracy therories with Alex Jones and Jesse Ventura. I just couldnt do it this year. I will go Christmas, unless I can think of something really good.

Most of them already do work. Some are in our military (I know because my own family is one of those 47% and my husband is active, and my income is only 9/11 GIBill and reserve pay, since I am a student and stay at home mom). The vast majority of those who are in that 47% have low paying jobs or are students or are retired. They are not living off the system to begin with.

That's just silly. I think it would make him want us to pray that the President will make good decisions.

I dont even think that the conservatives will even pray for Obama. Their hate is so great.

The point is they dont pay enough taxes, not their character or willingness to work. It is not even a right or wrong thing with Romney, the Republicans and the 47%. It is, as one would expect, bout the money.
