CIA Director Resigns

Re: CIA director Petraeus resigns over affair

Not satisfactory for me. I'd just as soon see the whole agency resign. Close up shop. Board up the windows.

Re: CIA director Petraeus resigns over affair

This is the head of the CIA, conspiracy is in his job description. So, you're supposing that the head of one of the world's top spy agencies is A) too stupid to avoid having affairs and B) not good enough at his job to keep it under wraps.

What I think is that a guy like Petraeus is NOT going to shame himself, destroy his 37-year-old marriage, and wreck his distinguished career to cover anyone's ass.

Re: CIA director Petraeus resigns over affair

What? The CIA exactly violated the orders to let the 30+ Americans and others there die and sent in what few guys the CIA could get in there, thus preventing those deaths replacing that with on 4, including the 2 Seals. Saving those lives but losing their own was in direct contradiction of orders. The attack and lack of response can't be blamed on the CIA, but the lack of those that were supposed to die not dying is.

Perhaps your sarcasm detector has a virus in the software.

Re: CIA director Petraeus resigns over affair

Good one.

yet, it wasn't a big issue for President Clinton. :3oops:

Yes, as we've established, getting impeached is no big deal.

He's supposed to testify before Congress next week, but behind closed doors. I'd sure like to be a fly on the wall in that meeting, especially now that he has no career to protect.

Yet, Clinton served out his term did he not?

Clinton was not convicted at his impeachment trial as President of the United States. He was acquitted by the Senate on February 12, 1999.

Er hmm, Oliver North *cough*. When the POTUS asks, old generals fall on their swords. The faithful ones at least.

Good response but I think realistically you have to give people, even in sensitive positions at least one pass on personal issues. Expecting perfection or "don't get caught" from officials creates an atmosphere of dishonesty and *winks winks*. I don't live that way and don't expect it from others. Now if he's a brain surgeon doing surgery, saying "ooops" then **** can him.

Oliver North was a kook; Petraeus is not. Take off the tinfoil hat.

Re: CIA director Petraeus resigns over affair

The rules are different when you are affiliated with a spy agency - and in this case it is the guy heading it. There is a huge potential liability issue that arises as a result of an affair. Heck.. historically how many secrets and spies have been compromised due to not being able to resist the temptation of a bit of strange?

The lapse of judgement and the affair itself is the shocking news, his resignation as a result is no surprise though.

I'm not saying that Petraeus should be pilloried for this. Obviously he had a tremendously distinguished career. He is only human. But dayum. He's the last person I would have expected to make such a mistake.

Really Adam? That's just absurd. Regardless of how miffed you are at the guy's politics after the fact, his service record is brillant and he flushed his career, his excellent reputation and many years of his life being the goat for his President.

North flushed his career by participating in an illegal scheme that he knew to be illegal. He paid the price for it.

It's always the choirboy that put the bag of burning dog poop on the priests doorstep. Meaning that his excessive effort to carry that image often causes an internal rebellion. I'd rather he said "Hey, I screwed up and I owe my wife and family an apology, or not. And if the President wants me replaced I'll step down". That's how you should roll if you're going to impress us as keeping it real. I can't stand the current PC crappola that passes as decency.

Re: CIA director Petraeus resigns over affair

About a week and a half ago I heard a talking head call this one on TV. Can't remember who or where I heard him but he was saying Petreaus was going to be the fall guy on this one.

I'm sure there's more to the story, which will probably come out in the following days.

I don't want to go too far into speculation, but I thought it was bizarre that Petraeus purportedly went to see a movie the night of the Benghazie attack. I'm thinking maybe he wasn't really at a movie....

Good point. Who?

OMG, not with Hillary?!

(actually, I'd think that is awesome)

Someone finally made the connection. He was out hotel humping instead of watching the store? That should get you fired. If that turns out to be even remotely true, then he's getting off easy. See how fast things can change a mind?

Sure, but didn't they roll on those Secret Service agents who legally hired some party girls during off hours, and then yap about "it's not a culture issue", etc.? Um, yeah guys, it is a culture issue, but it's a normal culture issue. The only real issue is that you deny what everyday culture is like. Shouldn't crucify either. I'd rather you bug me to ensure national security, and let me hire some party girls, then to somewhat arbitrarily fire me for life and embarass me in some political charade of faux-nobility.

Rep. Randy Forbes, R-Virginia, a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, is one of those who think change is overdue -- and that Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan will have to go."I think it's time to put somebody else in there to make sure we're getting a different culture in the Secret Service," Forbes told CNN.

At least one Republican thought firing was how to change male-genetic culture.

I agree, it's kind of surprising that it came out. But not at all surprising it occured, occurs, or if we knew every case of it, it would be like half of everyone in the agencies.

In the aftermath of the assault, questions have been raised within the administration and on Capitol Hill about Mr. Petraeus's role in responding to the attack. On Oct. 10, lawmakers grilled senior State Department officials about the attack. Some senior administration officials say they were surprised Mr. Petraeus went to that night's private Washington screening of the movie Argo, about a covert CIA operation in 1979 in Tehran.

One thing you're forgetting is the wife and how she want this to play down. Do you not think she'd have a say?

Re: CIA director Petraeus resigns over affair

I wonder if any of this is trying to take the stink off the State Department? Keep an eye on how this unfolds but good read Adam. ;)

At one point during the consulate siege, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton telephoned the CIA director directly to seek assistance. Real-time intelligence from the field was scarce and some officials at State and the Pentagon were largely in the dark about the CIA's role..

Uh huh, where was he?

Re: CIA director Petraeus resigns over affair

Let me get a clock on that....

Yep, four minutes for the first conspiracy theory to be hatched.

Since the right got their posteriors handed to them on a platter Tuesday night, their only hope is to take every bit of news they can find and twist and pervert it into some sort of administration scandal that they hope to use to their own partisan advantage.
