(Reuters) - Greece's government voted by a razor thin margin on Thursday to approve an austerity package needed to unlock vital aid and avert bankruptcy, despite an internal rift and violent protests at the gates of parliament.

Earlier in the evening, clashes erupted when a handful of protesters tried to break through a barricade to enter the assembly. Riot police responded with teargas, stun grenades and, for the first time in an anti-austerity protest here, water cannon.
This is what happens when Socialist promises and their PONZI/MADOFF schemes collapse.

Isn't socialism wonderful. All those meaningless promises that create misery for the masses.

Electing idiots who make moronic promises... eventually has consequences.

I didn't know you were an analyst of the Greek political system, zimmer
"I do not claim that every incident in the history of empire can be explained in directly economic terms. Economic interests are filtered through a political process, policies are implemented by a complex state apparatus, and the whole system generates its own momentum."

Socialism is not the problem here. Austerity is. Austerity has been proven in Greece to not be working, yet they keep doing it? Why? Probably to break the backs of working people an that institute fascism, which is on the rise in Greece. That's my guess anyways.

I've been following it and laughing when the Germans complain about paying for it. Why complain? It is only an expansion of Sozialmarktwirtschaft... von Bundesweit zum Europa weit (from a national to EU level).

Why do they have to employ austerity?
Because their Socialist PONZI SCHEMES failed. Now they want Nikolausi to bail them out.

Because they are broke, have no money left & cant get anymore unless they do this.

The only real alternative is for them to leave the euro but that would devalue their economy & hurt even more.

Its what happens when people run out of money.

The Greek government should just turn the money printing presses on high like in this Country. It works great. The problem with people not having enough money is so simplistic to solve. Just print more money. Problem solved.

Wow the denial really is a river in Egypt to the resident socialist. Greece has raised its taxes so high the rich have fled. They are soaking the middle class in Greece with huge taxes and they aren't paying them saying they prefer prison. California will soon face this and as California goes so does the nation. Or is it the liberal ideology we will begin preventing where the rich can go now as well as how they spend (donate) their money along with punishing their success?

The left's denial of the obvious is beyond staggering! These progressives just don't get it that the nanny state is not a sustainable structure. Taxing the crap out of the rich is the immediate "solution" to these small-brained ones! The Greeks know at this time that they can't print money as their way out... Obama still thinks that he can print money 'til the cows come home and no one will call his hand on it! It didn't happen to Greece overnight and it will be interesting to see how long it takes in the US!
    Obama lied... Ambassador Stevens died!

The Greeks are primarily the victims of the Euro and the dumb notion that you can have a unified currency without a unified government. In fact the Greeks aren't lazy and it isn't an out-of-control socialist state. In fact the Greeks work longer hours than the Germans. Social expenditure as a percentage of GDP is lower in Greece than it is in Sweden or Germany. They have problems, but the idea that it was caused by socialism is nonsense.
"The necessaries of life occasion the great expense of the poor. They find it difficult to get food, and the greater part of their little revenue is spent in getting it. The luxuries and vanities of life occasion the principal expense of the rich, and a magnificent house embellishes and sets off to the best advantage all the other luxuries and vanities which they possess. ... It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion."

    -- Adam Smith
