Tammy Baldwin is elected the first openly gay senator | The Ticket - Yahoo! News

Wisconsin Democrat Rep. Tammy Baldwin has been named the projected winner in her race against Republican Tommy Thompson. Baldwin's victory makes her the first openly gay candidate elected to the U.S. Senate.

"Tammy Baldwin's victory showed what a majority of Americans already know: that candidates should be judged on their qualifications for the job and not their sexual orientation," said Herndon Graddick, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

Awesome. Good news on another front after last night's elections.

Good, our plan of gay domination is working! MWAHAHAHAHA

And the best part is, her record on base civil liberties(PATRIOT Act, NDAA, etc.) and war inspires me to support her even politically! :D

I'm sorry but I just can get excited by stuff like this it's like "first senator to use missionary position gets elected", or "first senator to like role play gets elected", I'm really not caring what politicians get up to in their bedrooms.

This may make me seem like a horrible, horrible person but I will say it.

Tammy? Really? Tammy beat Tommy in the elections and not Tammy gets to go Congress. :D

I only find it hilarious because in all the movies, Tammy is usually the name a woman dancer gets...

Also, this video from the onion.

Other than that, I have no problem with her sexuality. If the good people of wisconsin saw her fit to represent them then she must really be an impressive lady. A lady named Tammy :))

If anyone else is named Tammy in the DP forum, please don't hate it. I only find it amusing because of my lack of contact with... Tammies around the world :))

That's nice.

I wish the first openly gay senator was a good one, though.

Well, when you get the Republicans to support a gay candidate, let us know. If they're openly gay, it'll be awfully hard to sneak them past the religious nuts.

and i too yearn for a time, hopefully in the near future, when such inconsequential characteristics are widely viewed as inconsequential and no longer newsworthy

not so sure
lindsey graham keeps getting re-elected in south carolina

and before you insist he is not out in the open, his secret is as well kept as the fact that israel has nuclear weapons, but he similarly refuses to admit it

Good news. Another step forward for LGBT rights.

When did I say they needed to be a republican?

Haha, I just looked at this guys wiki page:

Graham has never been married and, when questioned by Robert Draper of the New York Times, said, "I know it's really going to upset a lot of gay men—I'm sure hundreds of them are going to be jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge—but I ain't available; I ain't gay. Sorry."[54]

sadly it appears her being gay is the main positive qualification for some on this board

what she does in her bedroom should have no relevance to opposing or supporting her

I imagine everyone knows this, but nonetheless, some (not all) who agree with an individual will use something like this to justify a greater call for support and harsher criticism of opposition. This is, of course, absurd.

Its as important to me as whether a senator wears pinstriped suits or plain ones or pumps instead of flats

Well, personally I support her because I agree with most of her positions, but her sexual orientation is a plus. Her being gay is important because she is more likely to support gay rights than a straight candidate.

Plenty of straight people support the "gay agenda." I don't see how her being "more likely" to is relevant. You would clearly know if she did or didn't either way.

don't care who she has sex with... but I can't say i'm enamored with her positions on issues. ( which is par for the course with "progressive" politicians.)

doesn't matter much, she doesn't represent my state, so she's rather irrelevant to me.

Its officially a democrat world. Getting excited about an elected public official because she's gay.

I guess some things are more important than doing the job one is elected to do.
