Gay marriage is approved by popular vote in Maine, Maryland

Re: Ref. 74 supporters hanging on to hopes of a victory

Just to catch up, they would need 54 percent of the estimated 1 million remaining ballots statewide, and more than a third of those are expected to come from King County.

It helps to read.

I did...

Gay-marriage supporters across the country celebrated clear victories in three states Wednesday, but a measure in Washington remained too close to call.

Re: Ref. 74 supporters hanging on to hopes of a victory

Looks like Reuters was a little premature on their call.

King county is supporting this, with 391,165 or 65.66% of the vote.

Way 2 go Washington. You're leading the way.

So far as I'm concerned the meaningful world drops off sharply at the US Border, so what people in other countries do is none of my concern or worry. Life is not about joy or happimess. It never has been and never will be.
I don't think you understood my point, you said gay marriage would devalue straight marriage somehow, so my question is, isn't it already devalued by the mere fact that gay people around the country and around the world are getting married?

A word of caution.... wave that red cape in front of the bull long enough you might just get the horns.
What are you talking about?

I'm already an outcast. That happened at the moment of my birth due to physical issues and has simply continued with philosophical, emotional, and psychological ones as well. It's nothing new, and in fact something that I relish to a certain degree. I'll take my principles to my grave, even if they're what sends me there.
ok

Sorry, but you cannot FORCE me to accept ANYTHING. You can make it very unpleasant for me not to, but you cannot FORCE it upon me. Ask the two banks I no longer do business with because they do not have any MALE tellers on their staff.
I love the smell of homophobia and misogyny in the morning.

I understood it quite well. What I was attempting to explain is that so far as I'm concerned the rest of the world doesn't exist, so what they do in Germany, Spain, Japan, Brazil, Canada, etc... has no bearing (positive or negative) on the issue for me.

Good. Glad you got that bit. Some of us don't mind being the outcasts and pariahs. We see a different benefit for ourselves personally than personal relationships and the like.

I love the smell of homophobia and misogyny in the morning.

Then you should be very pleased.

Life isn't about joy or happiness? Crap, I've been living my life all wrong then!

I seem to recall the words "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness"

Me too.................

I don't think you are going to find many here who believes you.
And for those that do,I have a very nice bridge in Brooklyn I can sell to them dirt cheap

You think denying rights is supporting more freedom. Go on . . . .

No I think all Americans should have equal rights and they do....I am just against changing the definition of marriage, be it for Gays. Polygamy, inter family, etc.

Re: Ref. 74 supporters hanging on to hopes of a victory

With incoming ballots from King County increasingly favoring the measure — 67.6 percent Wednesday, up from 65.5 percent on Tuesday evening — gay-marriage opponents seemed unlikely to gain enough votes to win

LOL....NP not reading past the headline in order to cling on to his hope. Sorry NP....as I have told you countless times before...even you will live to see the day that gay marriage is approved. I wasn't expecting your home state to be one of the first, but I congratulate the good people of the State of Washington for rejecting bigotry and supporting freedom and justice for all.

Okay forget the rest of the world, I just want an answer to my question. You seemed quite worried about the value of your marriage or of straight marriage in general in this country. So do you consider it already devalued or not?

Not changing the definition of marriage is not giving same-sex couples equal rights.....

That is where we differ....I am for everyone having the same freedoms.

Yes, so you support Gay Marriage. Same freedom to marry who you love as heterosexuals have. Glad to have your support.

I do believe that it has been devalued to a degree, by the quickie marriage, the ease of divorce, and the general degredation of the ideals of marriage. However, I do believe that those things can (and should) be remedied through appropriate legislation and societal changes because they are simply tweaks that need to be made to adjust the system back closer to what it used to be, and still should be. Once we cross the barrier of gender, there's really no chance that we can ever undo that mistake.

Let's say more and more states legalize gay marriage (hell maybe even all states), and I'm assuming you are married (if not's let's hypothetically say you are):

1. Will this cause tension between you and your wife?
2. Will you get divorced because the mere thought of gay people getting married has somehow spread it's disease of gayness to your matrimony?
3. Will your commitment to each other change in anyway?
4. Will your love change?
5. Will you and your wife in any way, shape or form alter your relationship to each other if two completely different people are doing something that has literally no effect on you?

If the answer to those questions is no (and it is no), then your idea of your marriage being somehow less meaningful is just made up, it's imaginary and you're manufacturing it to sort of repress your own fear and hate. You're living in an imaginary universe where things magically affect each other without rhyme or reason.

Actually, YOU make your marriage meaningful and valuable. It's based on how YOU choose to define your relationship with your spouse. It's not my responsibility or anyone else's responsibility to affect or influence your marriage with things that happen outside your household. Conservatives often love to talk big about individual liberty and not allowing external forces to influence you because you make your own destiny, but when it comes to issues like this, oh boy, the hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Re: Ref. 74 supporters hanging on to hopes of a victory

The Washington State Secretary has reported that 100% of the votes on this are in from his official website. Same sex marriage will be legal in Washington come Dec. 6th.

Referendum Measure No. 74 Concerns marriage for same-sex couples

Don't be misled by that. Washington is entirely vote by mail, and ballots are valid as long as they are postmarked by election day. There are hundreds of thousands of ballots yet to count. If you visit the Secretary of State's website you can see how many ballots are estimated still to be counted.

November 06, 2012 General Election - Voter Turnout

Having said that, the Referendum measure will still pass.
