Colorado and Washington passed referendums legalizing marijuana for recreational use, becoming the first states in the country to legalize the drug, according to ABC News.

See that light way down the tunnel? It's a train, and in the next few years, it is going to run over the War on Drugs, one of the most idiotic wars that idiots in Washington ever started. Colorado and Washington are just the beginning of the end for a failed policy that only benefited those who have been making a profit off this war.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but it is my understanding that while Congress is who declares schedule I drugs (of which marijuana is one) illegal, it is the executive branch that determines which drugs are on that schedule. So theoretically, Obama could remove marijuana from the schedule 1 list unilaterally? I have seen no evidence in his first term that he would do that, but could he do it theoretically?

This makes me so furious... that I don't live in either of those two states.

This is the beginning of the revolution. The rest of the dominoes will fall.

Yes he could. He also controls departments like the DEA, ATF and such.

Yes we cannabis.

Lol.

To me, this is the only real news to come out of this election.

props to Colorado and Washington. here's hoping the fedgov doesn't raid the **** out of them.

Yes we Cannabis!

EDIt: Dammit!

Well, one of the few bright sides out this election.

Although Oregon couldn't follow suit, I am extremely proud of my home state of Washington.

At the very least, I hope President Obama asks the DOJ/DEA to sit down with Colorado and Washington state officials and come up with some ground rules. If the DEA is kicking down doors in Boulder and hauling in people with a few plants, then that's going to be bad for business.

I think the only thing the DEA should concern itself with, for now, is large quantities of marijuana crossing state lines out of Colorado. Until more states move in this direction, people can't be checking their plants and seeds at the Denver airport.

Just my opinion.

I have no plans to be checking my plants at the airport. Definitely don't want TSA employees to be getting high on stuff that they got for free by confiscating it from me. LOL.

I am very happy about this. They legalized it not just for medicinal purposes, but also for recreational purposes. And not only did they legalize possession, but they also legalized cultivation and distribution. They have torn a huge hole into the war on drugs, and it should substantially reduce drug violence all around the country.

It'll come down to your governors and legislatures in those states. If they have the will to tell the DEA/DOJ to suck it and back it up, the feds will back down. As long as the local law enforcement departments can be persuaded to follow the law, the DEA (and for a good measure the DOJ) is toothless. The feds would have to bring all the resources they need with them for every raid and then find somewhere to hold the prisoners afterwards.

Once the other states see how much money Colorado and Washington are going to make off this, they will want to follow suit. Like others before me have said, it's only a matter of time.

Just remember, when pot becomes legalized across the US, Alcohol will still be the biggest killer.

I hope they have better luck than California. We passed medical marijuana years ago, but that didn't stop the feds from swooping in, closing down legitimately licensed medical MJ stores, confiscating the stock and fining the owners out of existance. :(

It seems strange nobody is considering why that happened in California, of all places.

The Mexicans are NOT going to allow Obama to take away this source of income from their country.

The smart money will still get their drugs off the street. If you ever want to have a professional job, you don't want to have your name on any store's ID list of recreational pot buyers.

Any evidence there will be a list of recreational pot buyers? As far as I can tell, it's slated to be the same as buying alcohol. Nobody has ever made a copy of my ID or put my name on a list when I've purchased alcohol. This isn't medical, so I can't see this being a problem.

If a Supreme Court can legalize abortion, it sure as hell is capable of legalizing drugs for recreational use. It's not IF they do this, but WHEN. Same with gay marriage, human sacrifices, or any other perverted activity.
