Pro-oil Canada fights U.S. environmental groups

Beneath the peat bogs and boreal forests in the northern part of this Canadian province are among the largest oil reserves in the world. Canadians have been getting it out of the prairies for over 100 years and piping much of it to the United States, which imports more oil from Canada than anywhere else.

But President Obama's denial of a permit for a new oil pipeline from Canada to Texas that has been worked on for years has angered many here who claim that the U.S. environmental lobby is harming their livelihoods without scientific basis.

They even accuse it of illegally assisting Canadian environmental groups and say it's time to scrap plans to sell more oil to America and step up efforts to redirect the pipeline to the Pacific Coast and energy-hungry markets overseas.

Why would President Obama want to hinder our best source of oil? Makes no sense at all.

This is about NAFTA, Free Trade Zones and taxes.

The should build a pipeline east or west to their own ports.

Canadians, even the tens of thousands in the oil industry, pride themselves on taking full advantage of their energy resources to create jobs while ensuring the protection and beauty of natural surroundings Canada is known for. But as the environmental movement gains influence in the United States, Canada is feeling the effects

So this immediately stuck out to me simply because Ive been to Canada and there is a **** storm every 4-6 months over crown lands being sold to developing companies.

Except for a bunch of refineries in California, most of the US refineries are in the South, and many along the route where the pipeline would come down. So there is plenty of potential to refine more oil for US consumption.

Re: Pro-oil Canada fights U.S. environmental groups

this is yet another Big Oil argument. Northern Canada has very little to commend it other than its resources and natural beauty, so any hint of jobs is important.

Blame the environmentalists is a common excuse. The fact is that TransCanada doesn't have the greatest safety record in the business and has basically had its own way in Canada for years.

Keystone will be built. We wont build a pipeline to the west coast to supply the chinese, we will build the pipeline to supply the american market. All its going to take is to get the environmental impact studies completed and the construction route finalized and safety features and procedures agreed to and its gonna happen.

the big oil anti-environment, anti-climate change lobby relies on greed, unscientific mis-interpretation of fact and scientific ignorance of the masses. The Koch brothers be damned, but moving with a modicum of caution and an understanding of the risks is a better approach than the "consequences be damned" approach of guys who stand to make billions.

Look, the federal government tried to legislate a pipeline into existence instead of letting it go through the usual process. I'm not sure why right-wingers are supporting Congress dictating things like this.

The "usual" process started in 2008. The State Department was stalling this to appease a political base. There is no reason it takes 3 friggin years to review a proposal and address all concerns. If it does, then it show how utterly incompetent the State Department is in these matters.

The short answer is Obama does not want to confront the environmental whackos who helped him get elected.
