Re: AP poll: Majority harbor prejudice against blacks

There is no doubt that racism and prejudice exists in all ethnic groups in America, and this poll will be used for political and personal gains.

In my opinion, these tests and conclusions couldn't be more biased than I ever could have imagined. Many of the questions are constructed in such a way that it would be very easy for a person to give answers that supports the author's conclusion. I think most here would agree that many people do not have the best reading comprehension and some/most are terrible test takers. Then comes the interpretation of the answers. I guess they can really read our minds.

And implicit racism? Implied though not plainly expressed: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. Sounds a bit inflammatory, doesn't it?

Racism is ugly and so is anyone's conclusion based on their own (implicit or otherwise) motives and prejudices.

More and more of America's youth are rejecting that attitude - for many of them, their own "kind" simply means people of their own age with zero regard for colour or ethnicity.

You can disagree all you want...you expect far too much from other humans. You're the type that sees a racist under every rock and behind every tree. You nor anyone else can control what someone thinks or feels or even truly believes...we can only attempt to control how they use it.

    Poll results

    Academic analysis

So far comments I've read are saying this is nothing more than blatant propaganda on the part of the Obama campaign, an attempt to 'shame' ignorant white folks into voting for that black guy -- I so luvs me the True Believers
As long as humans remain influenced to the voices of their primeval evolution there will always be racism to some extent, and this applies to all people not just whites.

Racism, or more accurately, the racist instinct, is a product of evolution wherein competing hominid species vied genocidally for control of natural resources until there was only one species left standing. Since evolution is a continuing process, this species eventually evolved, between and amongst themselves, very obvious physical distinctions, as well as cultural distinctions and varying concentrations of favorable talents, while adapting to the natural environment into which they settled. In the fullness of time, these distinctions served to evoke the heretofore genetically engrained primal instinct regarding "fear of the other" which had evolved as a survival mechanism during the primeval period of genocidal competition between hominid species. This racist instinct haunts us to this very day, and will continue to haunt us for as long as we are human. It is best to recognize this instinct for what it is and not exploit it as a political tool on either end of a political continuum. After all, such exploitation is, in itself, just another expression of this primal instinct.

    Wrong, wrong wrong!!11!!1!

that type of a statement, "You're the type that sees a racist under every rock" is exactly the type of thinking a true non-racist objects to - for it is the same as saying "Every black man is a thug and gang-banger" or "Every Muslim hates Americans" or "Every Catholic priest is a pedophile"

I'm not always correct but I do make the effort to judge others as individuals, not by the colour of their skin or their religious beliefs or their place of origin, but by the words they say, the actions they promote or take. It seems that far too many find it easier to simply make all-encompassing decisions on the most overt signs of difference that others exhibit.
“And I have no doubt that every new example will succeed, as every past one has done, in shewing that religion & Govt will both exist in greater purity, the less they are mixed together.”

She's right. We love the blacks, Jews, and Muslims as much as we do our own brothers and sisters.

Somerville you are a race baiter, nothing more. People like you will take anything anyone says and misconstrue it to make yourself sound good.
