Two years in a Row now Midlantic/NY/NE region is preparing for a late October Hurricane-like Storm.
After living a lifetime here with virtually no such events, it's amazing to be prepping again.
80 mph is Not the end of the world, but damage and flooding Could be very serious and we May see evacuations throughout the area.
Let's hope it weakens or veers east, but almost all models say otherwise.

'Frankenstorm' Headed to Region - WSJ.com
October 25, 2012
By JACOB GERSHMAN and ERIC HOLTHAUS

Greater New York began preparing on Thursday for Hurricane Sandy as an unusual confluence of weather patterns started taking shape that could produce what meteorologists dubbed a "Frankenstorm."

In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office warned in a news release of "heavy rain, high winds, flooding, tornadoes, coastal surges, and widespread power outages" as soon as Tuesday and said state agencies would be on alert. New Jersey officials said they had begun monitoring flood-prone areas that may have to be evacuated. In Connecticut, power companies were bracing for a test of a revamped storm-preparation system.

"It's definitely something that everyone should be watching", said Nelson Vaz, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton, N.Y. "A storm that maintains its strength, coming in to central New Jersey would focus the storm surge in the New York harbor area."

Lumbering north from the Bahamas at 20 mph on Thursday, Sandy was on track to start producing rain in southern New Jersey by Sunday morning. It was likely to converge with a snowstorm moving eastward from the Great Lakes, dumping rain and snow on Northeastern states through Halloween—a date giving rise to the storm's nickname."..."

Hurricane Sandy: Potential Serious U.S. Impacts - weather.com
Confidence continues to grow that Sandy will be a major threat to portions of the U.S. East Coast.

Northeast/Mid-Atlantic: Prepare for Widespread Impacts

will hit some portion of the Northeast or Mid-Atlantic coast, there remains uncertainty with the exact timing, location and magnitude of the worst impacts. The forecast involves a rare, complex atmospheric setup that will allow the system to pivot back to the northwest into the region rather than simply moving out to sea.

Where exactly this pivot back to the west or northwest occurs will dictate the timing and where the worst of Sandy ultimately hits. That said, Sandy will have a large wind field and therefore effects from the system will stretch across a wide area well away from Sandy's center. To reinforce, it is very important to not focus on the center of our projected path map since the impacts will extend well away from where Sandy's center eventually moves inland.

Significant impacts from Sandy could potentially begin as early as Sunday and continue into Monday and Tuesday."....."

This could be very bad.. Sandy could pick up speed and power over warm water as it heads north.

I hope people will prepare and button up.

I guess I am a bit jaded from living on the gulf coast.
About 3 times each season the weather guys hype everything up. "head for the hills, this is going to be a bad one."
A person's hurricane kit should look a lot like their blizzard kit.
extra food, extra water, backup power, are your trees trimmed?
Get all the loose stuff out of the yard.
The real key is preparation, and knowing if and when you should leave.
The phrase "run from the water shelter from the wind" is very true.
If someone is in a storm surge area, make plans to be elsewhere.

If this hits say the New Jersey shore, they can expect up to 80MPH winds from the north for 4 hours, calm,
and about 70 mph winds from the south for 4 hours.
Let's just prey it only bothers the fish!

While you see alot of '80 mph' in the weather maps..
my 5 day forecast for NYC (East Side Manhattan) from Same website is only 33 mph Tops at the time of this post.
5 Day Weather Forecast for 10017 - weather.com
Appears Center may be Jersey Shore/South Jersey Shore; though that would still mean alot of water funneling into NY Harbor.
Well see, it's weather.

Good luck to all of you in the region. Lets hope it diminishes before it gets to you.

If only we could interject and have it hit the set of Jersey Shore I think I could live with that. :)

Seriously though, right now in the Northeast we have unseasonably warm weather. If these two fronts collide, I can see a scenario where Sandy hits the NE very hard. Maybe even enough to mess up Tom (Princess) Brady's hair. :)

Tim-

I wonder what the liberals would be saying right now if it were headed for Texas? "Must be an act of God!"

Nicknaming it Frankenstorm for Halloween is just inviting dumbasses to not take precautions IMO.

A snow hurricane ... nasty!

Amazingly, as of earlier today there had been 94 mentions fo this in major newspapers and exactly ZERO of them connected it to climate change. How about that liberal media bias?

What does that mean?

What does that mean?

It means that the media has been so brow-beaten by knuckle-dragging conservatives that it's a joke to refer to the media as liberal.

That hands down is some of the most lame brained partisan crap I have heard in a long ass time. I mean this is a thread about a bad storm that may hit the east coast and you turn it into some stupid ass political bull****. Moronic at best, total and absolute failure of a post at worst.

It's not so much a liberal/conservative thing as it is a sensational thing. Scary things sell more newspapers, and sometimes reality isn't very scary so they have to make it scary. COULD CLIMATE CHANGE CAUSE GRAVITY TO REVERSE?? Is the headline, but the article concludes "nope." Too late. You already read it. They got their advertising revenue.

The timing of this hurricane brings up an interesting question. What if an entire state gets hammered by a major event that basically stops election day? If all of West Virginia is without power and the majority of their roads are a mess... what do we... do? Decide the election based on the few dozen people who lived across the street from their polling station and therefore could make it? What if the voting machines are electronic and there's no electricity?

Extend the election?

Do-over?

Either way, I expect a lot of lawyers getting a lot of money :|

I think a state could delay since the electors don't need to be determined until January. Probably would be an issue if the storm were a week later.

Oh well time to move the grill into the garage.

Yeah, you folks are probably not going to see a whole lot of me from Monday on. I have to go into work for a couple hours tomorrow (Sunday), and then 3-4 hours on Monday morning. As of 5pm on Monday evening I go on a 5pm-7am schedule until the storm damage is totally dealt with.

For those who don't already know.... I work for the 3rd largest Gas/Electric Utility company in the USA and we're based in Central New England.

If this shuts everything down there on Nov 6 what happens then?

I am right in the direct path but no one here is excited. It's peeps near rivers and beaches who are most at risk, I hope, that is. It's just it's usual swampy weather here.

So am I correct in thinking that you are a knuckle dragging climate change denier?

IMO, this increased certainty means the Mayor of NYC and other officials up and down the coast will call for Mandatory Evacuations from low lying areas this evening.
Closing Mass and Public Transit at some point Sunday.
Should be interesting to see if anyone shows for Monday's NYSE/Stock Market opening.
Though NOAA's wind model shows a very slight move South.

Millibars/Pressure even more serious at 958 (from 969 yesterday) and may fall to 949 pre-landfall.

I figure personal attacks is all you have because your argument is still off topic and has no substance at all.

The media tries to make everything a panic.
They are talking 40 mph winds. That is not OMG! OMG! like they make it to be. Just a rainy, windy day and little more. The only thing that'd mean around here is the sailboats don't go out.

The more important thing about this storm, is how do you fix coffee without any power for days...we can use a grill for foodstuffs, but my non-electric percolator won't work on candle power.

Had to run into Target today to by an extension cord! You would of thought the world was ending with the amount of people buying water etc.
