'Frankenstorm' Headed to Region

For those affected, a few words from someone who has been through a few Hurricanes.
Help your neighbors, if you can.
A full freezer can go several days if unopened, so plan several group cookouts,
only opening one freezer per day.
Keep eyes and ears open for ice and gasoline (this will be you focus for a while)
If you grill up too much, find other neighbors or working line crews and make a few plates.
Think of being without power for 8 to 10 days, and plan accordingly.
Your storm is different, in that it may not be ugly hot afterwords, but if working be
sure to get plenty of liquids.

Two years in a Row now Midlantic/NY/NE region is preparing for a late October Hurricane-like Storm.
After living a lifetime here with virtually no such events, it's amazing to be prepping again.
80 mph is Not the end of the world, but damage and flooding Could be very serious and we May see evacuations throughout the area.
Let's hope it weakens or veers east, but almost all models say otherwise.

Hurricane Sandy: Potential Serious U.S. Impacts - weather.com
Confidence continues to grow that Sandy will be a major threat to portions of the U.S. East Coast.

I wonder how much climate change is affecting the further north hurricanes? Living in FL I thought after the storms of 2004-05 if this keeps up I'm moving West.

I woke up with no cable this morning, but I never lost electricity. It was not too bad here at all. A few trees came down, and there is some flooding on some streets, mostly because the drains are clogged with leaves though. There are leaves and branches everywhere. Hope everyone came through okay.

See, not such a pain in the ass, as the media is trying to present it. :)

To those people in the storm surge area, I can assure you, it will be a pain.
I hope all had flood insurance, I suspect many did not, because theses events are rare.

Bail them out! Why banks can be bailed out and average citizens can't?

Don't bail them out, it is harsh, but our Federal Government is not charted to do so.
We do have FEMA which can do a trailer, and a loan.

yeah - Breezy Point, NY got off easy....

I did fine. All family members in Delaware were highly lucky, and got off with no damage and little more than some frayed nerves.

Look up Breezy Point, NY and see what happened.

Ah, so that's the neighborhood that burned down? But trust me, there are worse things than that.

Holy mackerel!
How was your personal experience, Dragonfly?
I think that is actually fire damage, But I think the flooding kept the fire dept out of the area.
I used the phrase "run from the water, shelter from the wind" it is very true.
The tidal zones are deadly places, our society makes mandatory evacuation a hard choice.
In the gulf coast, they told those who stayed to write their name and SSN on their leg in
permanent ink, to make it easier to identify the body.
These storms are nothing to kid about, if you live less than 20' above sea level, and 2 miles from a coast,
you could be at risk.
I know this does not happen often on the norther east coast, but it does happen.
Before buying a home, get a geographical survey map, and draw in a 20' storm surge.

Yes we were lucky here. People in other areas, not so lucky.

Yes, there are worse things. What is your point exactly?

I wasn't aware that this was some kind of competition about storms and natural disasters, but apparently some people want to make into that. I guess if the storm doesn't measure up to Katrina it's just not worth talking about for some people. If that's how they feel, why can't they just keep their big mouths shut then?

Ever hear that saying, "if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all." If you don't care about this natural disaster and you don't think it's worth discussing, then you don't have to participate in the conversations.

At the last count that I'm aware of, 40 people lost their lives due to this storm.

My point was, the media likes to exaggerate. :peace Agree?

Are you still trying to suggest that the storm system (Sandy) that hit us this week was little more than a passing bad thunderstorm, and it's only the media that's overplaying how destructive it was?

I was hoping you were just being sarcastic in an attempt to be humorous, but now I'm not so sure.

My point was, the media likes to exaggerate. :peace Agree?

Yes, the media likes to do that.

In this case, they aren't exaggerating. You're downplaying. This was literally record-setting. In what manner do you think it is being exaggerated? Give specific examples and quotes.

I am sarcastic ... towards the media. They make it sound almost like the Deep Impact movie, which clearly is not true.

No they don't. You're the one exaggerating now.
