We dodged the bullet here. My 81 year-old-mother-in-law is without power, however. We will get her to come here, if the power doesn't come on expeditiously. She isn't a whiner and is strong.

None of our trees came down, for which we are thankful.

I hope you folks who earlier in this thread were diminishing the impact this storm would have on the NE have reconsidered your comments.

Praying for everyone today. I have never seen anything like this storm that caused floods, fires and snow. Incredible!

It was an amazing and devastating Superstorm.
I am back in my place on the East River in Manhattan from a few blocks West.
Being right on the East River with a wide open south view/floor-to-ceiling glass, was perilous but no damage thankfully.
Was afraid as well, our bldg's garage would go under as it's only a few feet above FDR drive so had moved car.
Missed by a very few feet of drowning a few hundred autos.

My brother is out on Long Island and effected a mini-rescue himself yesterday early afternoon.
No power like the heavy majority of Long Island's 2.8 Million Residents.
When reports say "942,000 without power", that's customers/households, not people.
You have to multiply by app 2, I would guess, on all these utility reports of 'customer' outages.

Also, link reports many hospitals without power or backup.

Sandy's damage to LIPA may take 10 days to fix

"..More than 942,000 of LIPA's 1.1 million customers - 83% - were without power as of 1 p.m. Tuesday, far surpassing the 1985 record of 750,000 after Hurricane Gloria.".."

Damage to the regional electric backbone and other critical customers means that it could be "a few days or more" before the more than 1,200 repair crews are seen in neighborhoods doing repairs, LIPA's chief operating officer Michael Hervey said in an interview. LIPA expects full restoration to take at least 10 days, "and very possibly more," he said.
In all, 21 of the region's 27 hospitals have lost all or partial power from the grid, and they will be among the first to see repair crews, Hervey said. Of the total, 15 hospitals have their own generators, he said.

LIPA will also give priority to the extensive damage done to the transmission system in the wake of Sandra, including the roughly one-third of substations that have damaged or disconnected high-voltage lines from the area's power plants. A substation routes stepped-down power to neighborhood distribution networks. "We have several substations that do not have power to them," he said.

"This will go down as perhaps the largest disaster in Long Island history," Hervey said, noting the flooding, wind damage and the cumulative effect on the electric and other infrastructure.

While LIPA crews are only beginning to assess the damage, they are also working with local and county governments to help with the thousands of downed trees that require clearance from electric system where they have fallen on wires."."
My guess is more like a solid 3-4 Weeks for complete restoration as there is a shortage of neighboring crews to draw on because the damage was Heavy and regional.
LIPA also notoriously bad at restoration.

How is the underground in New York, is it flooded? Let's hope not.

[Guesstimate from viewing and Bloomberg Press conference this AM]

There is definitely water in the Subway tunnels, but mostly limited to Southern end. Of course, almost all the lines end/converge there.
Salt water makes fixing problematic too.
Yards where Eqpmt was stored also got flooded to some extent.

Lower lying lines in Brooklyn etc, a problem too.
Buses will be back first I hear.
    Subways don't know.
Maybe (?) by weekend on some better lines or part runs. Next week for full. We'll see.

We got spared. I went in to work today once the driving restrictions were lifted. Thankful for no damage, but I do fully understand how lucky we were.

Big storm? Yes. I am truly sorry for all who have lost anything due to Sandy. At this point Sandy hasn't lived up to the hype. Katrina was a Cat3 while I'm not certain that Sandy ever reached even Cat 1 by the time it hit.

Winds were sustained at 90 MPH at landfall.
