NYPD officer plotted to kidnap, cook and eat women, authorities say

The wierdest thing is how many COUPLES get caught for this.

*shivers*
That is a reason I commented we always instruct our daughter to never think some situation is safe because a woman is present with a man or there is any safety factor depending upon age. It is difficult to for people to accept that there are sadistic hunters who literally hunt people to capture, torture/torment and ultimately kill solely for pleasure.

I think if that is inside a person's pscyhe AND the person let it out, that is a justification for the death penalty as that person cannot be 'reformed." I've commented before I do not think the death penalty should be based upon murder, but upon torturous violent acts of sadism, even if the victim somehow lives. A teen who shots and kills in a robbery may not kill again after imprisonment. But if someone captures, tortures and mulitates another person finding pleasure in doing so, that is a far worse offense and a person too dangerous to ever release and even too dangerous to others in prison.

Front page, Chicago Tribune this morning:

Federal officials say they have foiled a grisly extortion plot involving two former police officers -- one of them released from Death Row nearly 15 years ago -- who plotted to abduct and dismember a man they believed had access to large amounts of cash from real estate holdings..."He took possession of the extortion location this past Monday, and met there with Engel over the next three days to plan how they would abduct the victim while posing as police officers, how they would restrain the victim, and dismember the victim after the extortion and murder," the U.S. attorney's office said in a statement...

They had “prop” firearms and fake law enforcement credentials, according to the U.S. attorney's office. Engel also possessed handcuffs and Mandell had a fake arrest document that appeared to name the victim as a criminal defendant. After the arrests, FBI agents searched the area where the two planned to abduct the man and seized a loaded .22 caliber semi-automatic pistol and additional ammunition, as well as saws, a butcher knife and zip-ties used for use as restraints.

We can be thankful they are former coppers. I guess we know why that's true.

Joko, you've hopefully read enough of my posts to know that I completely support LEO's; have had the utmost respect for them my whole life. I just can't believe the coincidence of these stories...just days apart.

I think we are on the same page of supporting good LEOs, respecting the profession, and deeply dislike bad cops too for the same reason people should support good ones and law enforcement in general. The "thin blue line" can be blurred, abused and misunderstood, but it also is an absolute necessity.

I wish urban street cops went back to wearing sharp blue uniforms, rather than black Ninja SWAT outfits.

I completely agree with bolded above. It's the same in many professions, actually. My own being one of them. As a Realtor, if I'm brought up on charges of misconduct, my peers will judge me. People don't understand the real estate profession. They just don't. What a layman perceives as improper conduct is often not that at all. I'm glad for that; I'd hate to be judged by laypeople. Doctors? Much the same way. Many other professions police their own. And that's a whole lot more good than bad.

Policing will always attract sadists; I imagine every cop shop in the US has a whole collection of these nutters they rejected as being psychologically unfit. The Chicago story does not disturb me as the men in it were apparently bounced off for bad behavior. Other professions will also have a chronic problem with sadists trying to join up: the healing arts, nursing home staffs, prison guards, etc. Any profession that involves an imbalance of power over a disadvantaged population will attract these evil people.

Real estate, not so much -- but Mags, a real estate agent is one of the few female adults left who will make an appointment to meet a stranger in a vacant house. Be careful, sweetie.
