Britain rejects US request to use UK bases in nuclear standoff with Iran | World news | The Guardian
"The UK would be in breach of international law if it facilitated what amounted to a pre-emptive strike on Iran," said a senior Whitehall source. "It is explicit. The government has been using this to push back against the Americans."

Sources said the US had yet to make a formal request to the British government, and that they did not believe an acceleration towards conflict was imminent or more likely. The discussions so far had been to scope out the British position, they said.

"But I think the US has been surprised that ministers have been reluctant to provide assurances about this kind of upfront assistance," said one source. "They'd expect resistance from senior Liberal Democrats, but it's Tories as well. That has come as a bit of a surprise."

So even our closest and most trusted allies haven't bought in.

The last time the UK went along with our "pre-emptive strike" it turned out rather badly. It is entirely sensible to avoid repeating the same mistake, especially since U.k. has little reason to get involved.

Our preemptive strikes are more likely going to come from under the ocean and on the surface of the ocean if it comes IMO. This feels a little like a story leaked to be a shot across the bow of Iran or to lead people in the US to believe that Obama does have a secret plan afoot.

I wouldn't want to be a BOO for anybody considering a nuclear stand off with an unstable, anti-western regime, either.

Anyone in Europe supporting an attack on Iran can expect a wave of Islamist attack on themselves, not to mention the economic disturbances that war creates. America sits across an ocean mouthing off to the Middle East, where Europe can be walked to from Middle East. What financial gain will attacking Iran serve anyway? It appears it will only create a massive debt and anger countries like China, India and others in the area who need Iran oil. Sanctions only strengthen an alternative trade situation do to practical trade needs, hurting the American dollar, turning our currency into the value of shat-wipe to them.

Good. Im glad they rejected our request. This is not the way to handle the situation especially with Iran accepting talks with US over the nuclear issues.

Can't say as I blame them. I wouldn't want another nation using my country's military bases as a staging area either. It targets the bases for retaliation, for one thing. But I do think the OP's title is a bit misleading (although it matches the link's title) in that it implies that the US has made such a request, when in fact all that has happened is that US diplomats have discussed what the UK position to such a request would be. Two very different things, actually.

As it stands, I think Obama is going to win the next election by starting a war and riding a patriotism bump.

Good to see! Bravo UK. Perhaps they learned some lessons from the poor experience in Iraq backing the US military aggression.
