George McGovern, an unabished liberal voice, is dead

George McGovern, an unabashed liberal voice, is dead - CNN.com

"George Stanley McGovern -- a staunch liberal who served South Dakota in the U.S. Senate and House for more than two decades and who ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic Party nominee for president in 1972 -- died Sunday at the age of 90, his family said.

"Our wonderful father, George McGovern, passed away peacefully at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD, surrounded by our family and life-long friends," his family said in a statement.

Rest In Peace George McGovern! He served his fellow man--he was concerned with the masses, us the people.

And like Ron Paul, the american electorate rejected him.

When he was admitted to hospice, I thought of the American President Series designed by Arthur Schlesinger Jr. The idea was to have historians by training or profession write a slim biography of each of the Presidents of the United States. Arthur Schlesinger Jr. recruited George McGovern to research and write his own biography of Abraham Lincoln. These aren't necessarily meant to be pushing the historiographical boundaries, and frequently re-run common arguments about each of the Presidents, but nevertheless, each of their viewpoints come out. It might make for an interesting read to those of you who are interested in either Lincoln or the recently deceased Presidential candidate McGovern.

In 1972, I had the good fortune to be the campaign director in my congressional district for McGovern in the primary and then was elected as a national convention delegate to Miami. I have many fond memories of that time and learned a great deal for his campaign - both positive and negative. He was a true American patriot and proud liberal. God bless him.

One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.... John Rogers

I voted in my first "election" in 1972 for George McGovern. The election was a very hot topic, even in my elementary school. The war in Vietnam, womens' rights and the draft were of great interest us. The fifth and sixth grade classes were allowed to hold an election. I happily cast my vote for McGovern. Sadly, he lost our election too.

I've always held fond memories of McGovern and my first "vote".

RIP sir and thank you for your service to our country.

Nixon was a pretty modern-thinking guy--unfortunately his demons did him in.
