A protest by 10,000 Muslims outside the offices of Google in London today is just the first in an orchestrated attempt to force the company to remove an anti-Islamic film from website YouTube in Britain.

...snip...

Organiser Masoud Alam said: "Our next protest will be at the offices of Google and YouTube across the world. We are looking to ban this film."This is not freedom of expression, there is a limit for that. This insult of the Prophet will not be allowed."

So the question is, does Google/You Tube continue to stand their ground, or is safety of the general public/Google employees more important than principle in this case? And how long will protests remain peaceful?

(Mods, if Telegraph isn't a "Mainstream Media" source I apologize.)

Hmmmm. Why am I not surprised?

As for Google and YT, I say stand your ground. Never bow to religious pressure, no matter where it comes from.

We know that in real terms Obama opposes free speech. Let's hope Google continues to support it.

Free speech is the strongest enemy of ignorant violent religious zealots. Of course they attack free speech. Free speech is their enemy more than bullets and bombs.

If people want to peacefully protest, they are more than welcome to even if I find the reason for their protest to be wrong. Google shouldn't ban the film, although claims that Google believes in free speech are full of crap, seeing as how they easily pull videos at the request of corporate interests.

Google better stand their ground, we have freedom of speech here and that includes the rights of these muslims to protest about something they are unhappy about. The irony is when one group uses freedom of speech to protest against another group's same freedom.

As for safety, we allowed a similar march last month to the US embassy but there are clear guidelines and policing in place in the event any group tries to take the law into its own hands.

The Daily Telegraph is a damn good newspaper, has long been one of two mainstream papers I've read over the years.

Google will keep the video up.

If google removed all videos that offended other religious people then that would be one thing. But seeing how nobody cares about religious people being offended until there is a threat of terrorism then everyone would know that google removing the videos would be nothing more than a act of terrorist butt smooching or terrorist salad tossing(slang for anal oral sex). If google has any integrity then it should tell those protesters to **** off or remove videos that offend all religious people.

terrorist salad tossing(slang for anal oral sex).

Why, thankyou, James.

I simply could not have lived another day without knowing this.

How did obama get into this conversation? especially since your comment is bogus in real terms.

This is why we are fully justified to install puppet dictators in those countries.

And thats probably why a lot of those countries hate out guts due to our unjustified interference.

I agree, google has already demonstrated a pretty strong pro-free-speech stance and I expect it to continue. And kudos to them for it.

Yeah, when Google/YouTube start taking down videos that are within their own standards just because somebody somewhere is offended and issues threats, then freedom of speech is meaningless, and liberty takes another pounding in the name of "freedom for me, but not for thee."

Google probably knew their home address and travel plans before they ever arrived :)

They won't do anything about it.

I think they should remove it. They don't enjoy freedom of speech protection throughout the world. If it offends enough people in one country that 10,000 people protest? I think it should be removed in the interests of peace.

That's been tried before many times but it never seems to bring any peace at all.

I believe your attitude will prevail, which is why the Muslims will win in the long run, no matter what Google does.

shhhhhhh. not too loud. "it's" listening....

This shocks me. There is absolutely no reason we should ever compromise our commitment to freedom of speech and the press (as guerrilla as youtube is) because a bunch of reactionary overseas folks don't like it

To each their own, I guess. We don't have freedom of speech in Great Britain unless their laws say we do. We don't have freedom of speech in the streets of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya -- you name the country -- we don't have it. Freedom of Speech is guaranteed to us by the U.S. Constitution in the U.S. Nowhere else. As much as we'd like to think so, we don't rule the world.

Al Gore invented the internet for us not them. If they want to be able to spam, and phish, and hack us, then this is the price they pay.

The only thing appeasement does is embolden the aggressors to keep going. How much are you willing to give up?

I don't know . . . but it just doesn't seem like it's worth the lives of 5 Americans in Great Britain . . . 10 Londoners . . . 50 . . . 100 . . . to protect the right of some guy to post up an internet movie that 10,000 people (100,000? people) find offensive enough to protest in the streets about.

I could be wrong. But I'm guessing YouTube's going to agree with me. Wrong or not.

Edit: I see by Grimm's post above that it looks like they already have.
