(Reuters) - Arlen Specter, a gruff, independent-minded moderate who spent three decades in the U.S. Senate but was spurned by Pennsylvania voters after switching in 2009 from Republican to Democrat, died on Sunday of cancer, his family said. He was 82.
Specter had announced in August a recurrence of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, cancer of the lymphatic system. His son Shanin Specter confirmed his death in Philadelphia.
Resilient, smart and aggressive, the former prosecutor frequently riled conservatives and liberals on his way to becoming Pennsylvania's longest-serving U.S. senator. He was elected to five six-year terms starting in 1980. He left the Republican Party because he said it had become too conservative.

Since I didn't see any posts about this as of yet, I thought I should do it.

It's always a sad thing when a public servant passes on.

I didn't like his politics but he certainly lived a full life and left his mark on the country. I hope he rests in peace.

Not an RIP thread?

RIP. sad to see anyone succumb to cancer. he fought it for a long time.

RIP to the Senator. He was a constant political presence most of my life. Sorry to his passing.

82! He lived a good life. RIP.

He was a fine senator, one of the few moderates who could muster bipartisian support. I was very sad to hear of his passing. :(

Don't talk to Anita Hill about pornos and sexual objects or she might create a national controversy over it! I always hated Arlen Specter but god did he ever pwn her for that nonsense.
