No, no, and don't get me wrong I'm not saying that. What I'm arguing is that the personal political opinions of the committee, and the hope that this will engender a positive conversation on a troubled EU dictated this decision. My point is that it is transparent and not what the Nobel Prize is supposed to be about.

By the nobel committee, who seem to be pushing a pro-europe agenda.

The modern EU is quite different from the free trade bloc that existed in the 1950's. Most euro-skeptics would be fine with a free trade arrangement. There wouldn't be any objection to the EU receiving the nobel prize if it were unchanged from the pre-EU variant.

It is precisely the issues of regulation, currency and fiscal policy, and loss of national sovereignty that cause so much concern.

I am aware that it is up to each country to hold its own referendum on EU membership. Why haven't we seen this yet? EU does not have popular support in many EU nations, and yet the leaders do not trust the democratic process.

This is why I say... the EU is the "next big step" in European democracy - except Europeans hate it and it's not democratic.

All EU member states are independent nations with their own governments. They consent to EU membership and the common policies that that entails purely by treaty and they are free to withdraw any time they wish. The EU, as a name, has only existed since 1993, but the organisation has existed since 1957 when Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Italy and West Germany signed the Treaty of Rome to create the European Economic Community.

But you're still wrong. The Norwegian Nobel committee has nothing to do with the EU, so nobody has given the prize to themselves. Are you suggesting that no European person should ever give another European person or organisation any prizes...ever. It's a retarded argument.

If the grammys give a canadian singer a prize, would you dismiss it as North Americans giving themselves a prize? This is your argument.

Let me know the next time the grammies give the United States government a prize for "Hail to the Chief." That would be a closer analogy.

Ever since they nominated (and ultimately gave) the Nobel Peace Prize to Obama after only being in office for six weeks...these awards mean next to nothing to me.

They are clearly little more then fixed, popularity contests.

As I said before, they've been a bit of a joke since Kissinger got one in 1973.

I had my doubts for a long time.

But the Obama debacle sealed the deal for me.

seems to be a lot of hate directed at the EU and Europe in this thread! Doesnt really suprise me as its something I have seen first hand whilst living in the US.

I think some of the more nationalistic of US posters see the EU as a threat to the US's global status. Something like that, or maybe they just really hate us.
