The article gives amazingly little detail, and that's a red flag.

Tenure, bother. Part of the reason Conservatives oppose teachers unions is precisely because teachers can't just be fired. It's not at-will employment.

Yeah, I'm well familiar with tenure, but it doesn't operate in HS like it does in the upper education environment. Regardless of tenure, she can still be fired for cause, and this is adequate cause and could fall under the anti-bullying stautes.

Even so, I believe the teacher should be disciplined as her actions were incorrect and unwarranted. I don't believe, as the parents have called for, that she should be fired. I don't believe the assistant principle in Texas who paddled teen girls to the point of bruising has been fired and that incident far outweighs this one in severity IMO.
We also don't know what lead up to the exchange. The teacher did this without provocation or prompt? I don't believe that for a second. I'm not saying this teen was misbehaving, but something lead up to this. There was a conversation or exchange or some kind we aren't being told about.

We don't have enough information to call it bullying. We don't know all the facts here. Maybe the teacher was out of line, but we can't know this point.

Quite right. Typically students will circle the wagons around the fellow student and 'fight the system, give it to the man' sort of thing. That the students are supporting the teacher is telling.
