U.S. Jobless Rate Unexpectedly Falls to 7.8%; 114,000 Jobs Added

The number is about bad math, not jobs. Obama's dismal performance at the debate needed something to counter and divert. So, a new unemployment figure. This takes the talking point of 43 months of over 8% unemployment off the table.

It seems to me like someone in the Obama group has a basket of these tidbits that are reserved and trotted out whenever necessary. Thus we get Zimmerman, a months old case which had already been resolved, the muslim video, a months old very poor video which has had no impact for months suddenly being touted as the cause of massive anti American riots and direct invasions of our sovereign ground in the mid east, just in time to divert from the real cause. Mitts taxes, a non story. The list goes on. Now conveniently when Obama needs another diversion, new unemployment numbers, which will be revised upward after the damage is done.

It is going to be interesting to see what is on the table for the necessary diversion after the Biden - Ryan debates.

Rigth, this is standard conservative fair; if reality doesn't mesh with your precooked world view then reality must be wrong. Thus we see that temperatures aren't really rising, the polls aren't really what the polls are, and the employment numbers aren't really the employment numbers. Of course this only happens when things don't go your way. If it had been a bad report it would have gone unchallenged and it would have been used to condemn Obama.

For future reference, the numbers from last month were revised upward significantly. Remember that, because Republicans only comment on revisions when they move down -- thus concluding that they ONLY move down.

I would like to know what those jobs are... and if they are jobs that can bring people into the middle class or not. If not, then its a very, very small victory...

Odd that the trend toward lower paying jobs that has been going on far longer than Obama has been in office is suddenly of concern. It's kind of like that deficit that was fine during the Bush II years and suddenly became the imminent end of Western civilization as soon as a Democrat became president.

Then the private sector must have been anticipating a new president for the last 2.5 years since the private sector has added some 5 million jobs over that period for 31 consecutive months of growth.

And if you believe that, I bet you bought some Facebook stock.

One interesting stat that often gets overlooked is that the unemployment rate amongst college graduates is 4.1%, with a 76% participation rate.

Table A-4. Employment status of the civilian population 25 years and over by educational attainment

This is in essence full employment and suggests strength in the middle - upper income job market. The unemployment is actually amongst the less trained and the young.

Thought I heard a massive explosion coming from the west... it was all those GOP heads exploding in anger over statistics and maths... first polls and now this!

This kind of news has been predicted for months, that the labor dept would come out with a unemployment figure ridiculously low to help the President. And voila, here it is right on cue.

Do you realize how ridiculous your paranoia and victim complex is becoming? The media and polls are unfairly targeting the right, the Labor Dept. is making up figures to screw the right. Maybe if that many people are out to get the Republicans they should realize they aren't a very popular party currently.

I just read an article on my cell phone (trying to find it online) that was published on Thursday and said the jobs report was expected to show an increase of 110k jobs and a stationary unemployment rate of 8.1%. I'm curious as to how 4k jobs was enough to drop unemployment from 8.1% to 7.8%.

1) Summer employment ended. People returned to school. Some of those jobs were absorbed by others. No new jobs created / less unemployed.
2) July and August report has been adjusted to add 86,000 jobs. Or, you could look at it as the Sept new jobs number is 200,000 higher than August, which should move the bar a little.

The jobs report in six charts

Labor participation up... unemployed down by 456K and employed up by 870K. It was a good month.

The 7.8% number is a joke.

The U-6 number didn't budge. The participation rate stayed virtually the same. And only 114,000 jobs were created - not remotely enough to lower the rate by 0.3%.

Even with the revisions of past jobs created (which apparently were mostly government jobs that were mysteriously unnoticed before - suuuure), the numbers do not add up.

And again, the U-3 rate is irrelavent, the U-6 is the true indicator...and it did not move.

Obamanomics cannot work, Bernanke's helicopter economics xpcannot work and Keynesian economics cannot work.

Anyone who believes otherwise simply does not understand macroeconomics...period.

They may understand economic terms and theories (and excuses). But they do not understand real world economics.

Precious metals and agricultural commodities is where your money (imo) should be until the money 'printing'/record low interest rates end.

Ok, so the unemployment since Obama's immaculation is 10.8%. Great news! NOT!

Even more important than precious metals and such. Skills.

Look for those numbers to be quietly revised up again later... again.

And when you get into the meat of the numbers you see:

Contained in the data are some disturbing numbers. The labor force participation rate remained near its recent low from August, with a September rate of 63.6 percent. The increase in the number of people employed is primarily due to people who found part time work but want a full time job. The number of people in that category rose by 600,000 to 8.6 million.

About 12.1 million workers remain unemployed. The number of workers unemployed for 27 weeks or more showed little change at 4.8 million. These hard core unemployed now represent 40 percent of all those unemployed. The average number of weeks unemployed rose for the third month in a row to 38.8 weeks.

An alternate calculation of unemployment produced by the BLS adds the number of unemployed, the number of part time workers who want full time work and the number of those marginally attached to the workforce. The U-6 unemployment rate remained steady at 14.7 percent.

It is telling that the President just went on TV and declared victory when the reality is a staggering defeat. How delusional do you have to be to believe this is good news?

:lamo:lamo @ people creating their own reality in this thread. What planet do you folks live on that any good news for Obama is distrusted based on no evidence. Those polls you link when Romney was doing well or Republicans were about to sweep in 2010 are no longer true because Obama started to lead. Unemployment numbers when they go up are linked constantly on here but when they go down must be a conspiracy.

There are contradicting stories, and this administration has made a mockery out of the Labor Dept which many no longer trust.

Good timing for the President after his lackluster debate performance.

Are you kidding me, its a conspiracy to get Obama re-elected. :lamo:lamo

A lot of people are questioning the numbers. Regardless, it will be old news by Nov 6.

Chicago's attempt at an October Surprise. Anything to stop the debate free fall. Not going to work.

Who do you think comes up with the data on shrinking median wages that is used constantly by Cons on this site? How about the number of individuals no longer looking for a job?

This should get him back many, if not more, of the votes he lost since Wednesday night.

What's good for America is bad for Conservatives.

Your Government is blatantly lying to you and you could care less

They lied about Benghazi, what makes you believe they are telling the truth now? I mean seriously, these numbers are going to wither under scrutiny and calls are going to start being made for this laughable patchwork "7.8%" to be revised before the election. This is laughable Soviet style propaganda.

114K Jobs added and the rate droppedhalf a %? Really? I mean are you kidding me right now? Disability has doubled since Obama took office. People are unemployed longer than ever before. People digging and dumpsters and eating rats aren't even being counted in the Labor Market. Gas prices are spiking over 5 dollars a gallon in CA and skyrocketing all over the country. Food Prices and other Commodities are risen in price by more than 25%.

This is what a real October Surprise looks like. Welcome to Chicago Politics.

According to bls,the economy added 181,000 jobs in July, rather than 141,000. And added 142,000 jobs in August, rather than 96,000.So that pretty well fly's into the face of your assertion that "This is laughable Soviet style propaganda ":2wave:

Odd how for the last 40 months the administration has said to not put too much stock in any one month's numbers, but as soon as the numbers improve a little, we should take it as gospel.

I'm happy for the people who have found work, I just hope the numbers being reported are accurate, and not just more political theater.

It's a telling tale when people would rather see bad numbers over improving numbers.
