Homeland Security 'fusion' centers spy on citizens, produce 'shoddy' work, report says - Open Channel

The Department of Homeland Security has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on a network of 77 so-called “fusion” intelligence centers that have collected personal information on some U.S. citizens — including detailing the “reading habits” of American Muslims — while producing “shoddy” reports and making no contribution to thwarting any terrorist plots, a new Senate report states.

The “ fusion centers,” created under President George W. Bush and expanded under President Barack Obama, consist of special teams of federal , state and local officials collecting and analyzing intelligence on suspicious activities throughout the country. They have been hailed by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano as “one of the centerpieces” of the nation’s counterterrorism efforts.
But a bipartisan report by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations released Tuesday concludes that the centers “often produced irrelevant” and "useless” intelligence reports. “There were times when it was, ‘What a bunch of crap is coming through,’” one senior Homeland Security official is quoted as saying .
I would rather the government not have the power to do this. If any are caught spying on us, they should be removed from office immediately.

We have a way of removing unsatisfactory politicians from office. It is called "elections". Unfortunately, we seldom exercise our right to get rid of the rascals.

Senators and congressmen resign after scandals all the time. There are recall votes as well. It is not too far fetched to remove politicians from office when they abuse their power. Waiting for an election takes too long.

Umm, sure. How many congresscritters can you think of who have resigned due to scandals? How many have been recalled? You would think that, given the single digits approval rating of Congress, most of them would be replaced in the upcoming election, but that never seems to happen either, does it?

    Recall of State Officials

Recalls do not occur often, but they do happen. There is a list of recalled politicians in both links.

Most politicians resign over sex scandals. But some resigned over a threat of a recall election.

    From the Wiki article:

In 2011, there were at least 150 recall elections in the United States. Of these, 75 officials were recalled, and nine officials resigned under threat of recall. Recalls were held in 17 states in 73 different jurisdictions. Michigan had the most recalls (at least 30). The year set a record for number of state legislator recall elections (11 elections) beating with previous one-year high (three elections). Three jurisdictions adopted the recall in 2011.[8]
So, it does work at the state level.

It wasn't so long ago, in fact, that California recalled its governor.

So, it might work at the federal level as well.

Maybe we could hire some hookers and get those sex scandals going... no, I suppose that plot would be uncovered.

In a country with 9%-to-18% approval rating for congress and a 90% reelection rate for incumbents?

Stop Repeat Offenders. Don't Re-Elect Them!
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

    Exactly.

Now, how do we get that message to the average voter?
