Hundreds of thousands of war vets still waiting for health benefits

Hundreds of thousands of war vets still waiting for health benefits - CNN.com

Phoenix (CNN) -- Mike Rioux can't go to the grocery store without making a list, even for a single item.
He can't drive without gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turn white. And he can't stand any longer than 30 minutes because of severe back pain.
This is Rioux's life after Afghanistan, where firefights and a roadside bomb blast left him with a traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder.
His ears still ring from the explosions. He suffers from vertigo, headaches, insomnia and nightmares. He has terrible anxiety, evident in an interview with CNN -- Rioux could hardly sit still, and his memory loss and inability to concentrate meant questions had to be repeated at times.
"I need to discover who I am again," he said.

As a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army, Rioux most recently was deployed in 2010 to one of the most dangerous spots in Afghanistan. There he survived firefights and blasts and witnessed much carnage in Paktia province, near the volatile Afghan-Pakistan border.
After returning home, Rioux faced a much different battle, one that neither he nor his wife, Maggie, expected.
I'd like to know why our veterans are still waiting for care?

    Better get used to it.

There is no money left and China is refusing to lend any more.

That's what happens when neophytes are elected to positions that are clearly beyond their understanding or ability.

    Perhaps we'll see more volunteerism.

What on earth are you rambling about? The article cited a substantial backlog of claims due to the transition from paper to electronic filing (about time don't ya think?), and delayed claims stemming from prior conflicts, not a funds shortage of any kind.

It's a great shame that we haven't devoted more resources to ensuring that veterans receive priority treatment and claim response.

No funds shortage of any kind?

Then what is this $16 trillion in debt we hear so much about? Can the US government keep printing money indefinitely without there being serious consequences?

What is there in the budget for those people, like veterans, who deserve better treatment? And why the backlog? There have been thousands of government employees hired since BHO took office. Where are they?

Perhaps everything is just fine, that things will continue just as they have always done since the end of WWII. But these 'backlogs' might well be a harbinger. I expect to see more.

There is NO fund shortage. Don't you hear that rumbling sound? That's Ben Bersnakey printing up 100s of billions for bank buddies.

It's a problem of bureaucratic incompetence combined with a decade of wars that are not in defense of anybody but MIC contractors. Shameful.

Yes, I understand that Americans are now printing all the money they need and are borrowing from themselves but I'm not sure this policy is sustainable.

I think we should all get healthcare for free. You know we should really vote for Obama, cause life is free when he's in charge. I mean four more years of paradise.....
