KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An Afghan soldier turned his gun on American troops at a checkpoint in the country's east, killing two Americans and two fellow members of Afghanistan's army in a shooting that marked both the continuance of a disturbing trend of insider attacks and the 2,000th U.S. troop death in the long-running war, officials said Sunday.

Saturday's shooting took place at an Afghan army checkpoint just outside a joint U.S.-Afghan base in Wardak province, said Shahidullah Shahid, a provincial government spokesman. At least two Afghan soldiers died, he said.
"Initial reports indicate that a misunderstanding happened between Afghan army soldiers and American soldiers," Shahid said. He said investigators had been sent to the site to try to figure out what happened. It was not clear if the assailant was killed.

One U.S. official confirmed that the service member killed was American, while another confirmed that the civilian was also American. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the nationality of the dead had not yet been formally announced.

The attacks are taking a toll on the partnership between international and Afghan forces, prompting the U.S. military to restrict operations with small-sized Afghan units earlier this month......snip~

Thats 50 killed and does not include the Wounded. This time there is conflicting reports on this story. First it was stated that the Afghans came upon the NATO checkpoint and a firefight ensued. Killing the US Contractor and a US servicemen. Now this piece is describing the incident quite differently.

As this was all over the Radio last night. Including that how some of the Afghan Army Higher ups wants us gone and are actually creating a worse relationship to work with them.

Truhtfully, I don't know what to think about it. As like I stated the Radio Stations were a buzz with the Story this Morning. All I know is I am tired of hearing how are guys keep getting shot in the back. Do you think the Afghanis would stop if we found out which Higher up is causing the problem and we remove him from the game permanently. That they would get the message. Thoughts?

No one else tired of our guys getting shot in the back? What if our troops are having to engage other Afghan Army Units in firefights? When do we say enough is enough? When will our so called leaders speak out?

Afghan Inside Attack Kills 2 Americans, 2 Afghans, Marking 2000 US Troop Deaths

An Afghan soldier turned his gun on American troops at a checkpoint in the country's east, killing two Americans and at least two fellow members of Afghanistan's army in a shooting that marked both the continuance of a disturbing trend of insider attacks and the 2,000th U.S. troop death in the long-running war, officials said Sunday.

The string of insider attacks is one of the greatest threats to NATO's mission in the country, endangering a partnership key to training up Afghan security forces and withdrawing international troops.

Saturday's shooting took place at an Afghan army checkpoint just outside a joint U.S.-Afghan base in Wardak province, said Shahidullah Shahid, a provincial government spokesman.

"Initial reports indicate that a misunderstanding happened between Afghan army soldiers and American soldiers," Shahid said. He said investigators had been sent to the site to try to figure out what happened.

Afghan soldiers and policemen -- or militants in their uniforms -- have gunned down more than 50 foreign troops so far this year, eroding the trust between coalition forces and their Afghan partners. An equal number of Afghan policemen and soldiers also died in these attacks, giving them reason as well to be suspicious of possible infiltrators within their ranks.

The attacks are taking a toll on the partnership between international and Afghan forces, prompting the U.S. military to restrict operations with small-sized Afghan units earlier this month.

The close contact -- with coalition forces working side by side with Afghan troops as advisers, mentors and trainers -- is a key part of the U.S. strategy for preparing the Afghans to take the lead in security operations as the U.S. and other nations prepare to pull out their last combat troops at the end of 2014, just 27 months away.

yesterday:

Thousands of people thronged the streets of Karachi on Saturday in the latest protest against a US-made anti-Islam film, police and witnesses said.

The protesters, who included activists from Sunni Tehreek, wore green and white headbands as they marched through the city’s main MA Jinnah road while some trampled on the American flag.

They chanted slogans including “Hang the American film maker” and “We are ready to sacrifice our lives for the honour of Prophet Mohammed.”

Shafiq Ahmad, a senior police officer in Karachi, said there were “at least 15,000” protesters while rally organizers claimed “millions of people” participated.

Police beefed up security before the rally, while paramilitary forces were also deployed.

friday:

Libyan demonstrators lobbed hand grenades at security forces and set cars ablaze after a rally in Benghazi on Friday in support of a hardline Salafist group which was evicted from the second city.

More than 200 men converged on Benghazi's Al-Jalaa Hospital, which was guarded by members of Ansar al-Sharia until Friday of last week, when anti-militia protesters forced them out, an AFP correspondent reported.

Interior ministry forces fired warning shots in the air from inside the base. Demonstrators responded by throwing hand grenades at the outer walls and torching two parked cars.

Troops arrived quickly on the scene and the crowd dispersed. Some 25 soldiers took up position around the building.

Violence last Friday killed 11 people in Benghazi.

USAF = brave soldiers*

Afghanistan = deeply independent, fundamentalist Islamic region

Afghan Mentality : grave of empires, foreigners are trying to take us over*

Solution = get ISAF troops out, keep Northern Alliance relationships, make Khazi responsible for country.
His calls, his culture, his Afghanistan. Air support should it be wished.*

Why are we trying to westernise a desert the Russians pulled out of?

Our friends shouldn't be dying for a Desert.

Ron Paul:
"There really is nothing for us to win in Afghanistan. Our mission has morphed from apprehending those who attacked us, to apprehending those who threaten or dislike us for invading their country, to remaking an entire political system and even a culture … This is an expensive, bloody, endless exercise in futility. Not everyone is willing to admit this just yet. But every second they spend in denial has real costs in lives and livelihoods … Many of us can agree on one thing, however. Our military spending in general has grown way out of control."

This is not Vietnam they were tougher and more organised.

This is however futility.

Can I get a Mod to merge this with the Prof thread on the same topic in Breaking News?

"The American people, now more than ever, want U.S. troops out of Afghanistan. According to a recent poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, only 39 percent of Americans want to "keep the troops there until the situation has stabilized," while more than half (56 percent) want as quick a withdrawal as possible. That's a reversal from the same poll taken just before Obama was elected president in September 2008 in which 61 percent favored a continued troop presence and 33 percent favored withdrawal.

Many analysts predict the Taliban will simply wait for American troops to leave and then take control of the country. Adding to the chorus of calls for withdrawal have been comments from Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, who recently referred to U.S. soldiers as occupiers and made public the fact that America had held talks with the Taliban."

Afghanistan is saying 'f*** off'

Even Karazi call's it US occupation

What is the point?

To stabilise it? Worked well for the British and the Russian empires didn't it?

Re: Afghan Inside Attack Kills 2 Americans, 2 Afghans, Marking 2000 US Troop Deaths

It is truly offensive to see the MSM refer to Muslims killing American boys as "Green on Blue" attacks. The anti-American media intention is obfuscation, to make it sound like a little child's game with no real interest or importance being attached. As in all media reports, nothing negative is EVER to be said about the Muslims, who hate Americans, hate America almost as much as the Obama liberals.

"Green on Blue" attacks. Let us all wonder who any of those people are. Next article please, nothing of importance there.
