Chavez rattled by heart-throb rival - Americas - World - The Independent

The crowds are bigger, his speeches slicker, and Venezuela's young opposition leader, Henrique Capriles, is on a roll in a final, frenzied push to end President Hugo Chavez's socialist rule. With just one week left before the Opec nation's presidential election, the 40-year-old state governor is whipping up crowds like never before, creeping up in the polls and becoming increasingly aggressive in his attacks on Chavez's policies.
"We've never had a candidate like him," gushes shopkeeper Andrea Gomez, 42, screaming at Capriles like a teenage fan at a pop concert, as the passing politician blows kisses from an open-top cavalcade on the Caribbean coast north of Caracas.
Capriles has made big inroads among the working class where Chavez has his power-base, but still faces suspicions that he is too much of a rich kid and will end Chavez's popular welfare programmes.
The 58-year-old incumbent remains a formidable campaigner and has a strong connection with many Venezuelans, especially the poor. Yet while a majority of big pollsters still put Chavez in front, two – Consultores 21 and Varianzas – have Capriles just ahead.
Striking similarities with our own presidential campaigns.

I can think of many titles for Mr. Romney, good and bad but heart-throb seems a bit, well, you know, not exactly:)

Yes ...very populist campaigns both.

Obama is a disaster, Chavez is a mini-disaster.

What they promote has similarities.

"Rattled"? He is leading by 10 points with the election just around the corner...

The challenger better keep his bullet proof vest on at all times.

The overwhelming majority of people in this thread barely understand the politics of their own country. To expect to provide them relevant commentary on a country 95% of them have never even been to is an exercise in futility. Chavez isnt going anywhere. His power is solidified by the fact he has given many venezuelans an opportunity at life through education reform and food programs. 40 years ago they would have starved and died uneducated thanks to right wing governments. The majority of the country wont forget that when its time to vote.

/thread.

Only a lib would have difficulty seeing it.

Actually I am very conservative. VZ has many problems and since they have been pumping oil for 80 years they should be in better shape. We have always enjoyed a military dictator in VZ who was US friendly. Chavez is out of the box... but he's trying to get small businesses re-opened after decades of empty store fronts.. and Petro Caribe is a good idea to protect VZ from the vagaries of the petro dollar.

I don't like everything he says or does, but he's definitely FOR VZ..... What's happening is that he's been getting the Mossadeegh treatment since Bush junior.. as well as recommendations of death threats by our TV evangelists. Why not butt out?

You guys really think Obama is a far lefty don't you?

'Fraid so............

Obama certainly doesn't have all the answers, but he clearly knows America can't survive without a strong middle class.

Middle class? What the Hell is that? For years, America survived the worst sort of liberal fruitcakes and ideas and became the most prosperous, powerful country in the world, all because nothing seemed to permanently wound the huge American middle class, who always paid their taxes, developed the best schools in the world, the most rewarding economic system and a first class medical system, unequaled in the entire world.

That GREAT AMERICAN MIDDLE CLASS has now been destroyed, replaced with America hating, uneducated, welfare drawing liberal client groups that are referred to as "Middle Class" even though they don't even pay taxes. They espouse the sorts of silliness that results in "Justice for Trayvon" t-shirts. Obama has destroyed the class that created the America you hate so much.

The American middle class has been shrinking for well over a decade.

How do you tie the loss of manufacturing, the dot com bust, the housing bubble, and two ridiculous wars together with protest concerning an appeal for justice?

In 2000 my bro needed to borrow 5 million for expansion in a credit worthy and rapidly growing business.. He hit the wall because the banks were in a feeding frenzy over dot coms.. 2 years later, he borrowed 7 million.. Hate America? Either you're nuts or your racism has got you all tangle footed.

Yes, in his mind; he's just not a very good liberal in implementing his entire agenda. That's why many liberals will be holding their noses in the voting booth this fall.
