US Move To Give Egypt $450 Million In Aid Meets Resistance

The Obama administration notified Congress on Friday that it would provide Egypt’s new government an emergency cash infusion of $450 million, but the aid immediately encountered resistance from a prominent lawmaker wary of foreign aid and Egypt’s new course under the leadership of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The aid is part of the $1 billion in assistance that the Obama administration has pledged to Egypt to bolster its transition to democracy after the overthrow last year of the former president, Hosni Mubarak. Its fate, however, was clouded by concerns over the new government’s policies and, more recently, the protests that damaged the American Embassy in Cairo.

The United States Agency for International Development notified Congress of the cash infusion on Friday morning during the pre-election recess, promptly igniting a smoldering debate over foreign aid and the administration’s handling of crises in the Islamic world.

An influential Republican lawmaker, Representative Kay Granger of Texas, immediately announced that she would use her position as chairwoman of the House appropriations subcommittee overseeing foreign aid to block the distribution of the money. She said the American relationship with Egypt “has never been under more scrutiny” than it is in the wake of the election of President Mohamed Morsi, a former leader of the Muslim Brotherhood.

“I am not convinced of the urgent need for this assistance and I cannot support it at this time,” Ms. Granger said in a statement that her office issued even before the administration announced the package.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, speaking at a meeting of the Group of 8 nations in New York, said on Friday that the world needed to do more to support the governments that have emerged from the Arab Spring uprisings, including those in Egypt, Libya and Tunisia.

I love how the US is in economic turmoil, yet we have a half billion bucks for the Muslim Brotherhood.

I suppose that's what happens when you print funny money....

Obama was probably like; "yeah, sure no problem just tell us what you need and we will print that for you and get it to you ASAP."

Obama is certainly without question either the most evil tyrannical or gullible president we have ever had.

This crazy crap reminds me of a recent article I read on cracked.com.

The Brits were attempting to take an island mid 18th century (I forget the name of the island), Then the chief of the island had the audacity to ask the Brits for ammunition so they could fight - obviously that request was turned down, however I'm sure if Obama was in command he would certainly provide the enemy with ammunition.

Besides the same damn thing happened recently - and several times I might add by Bill Clinton when he kept on giving aid to North Korea, which in turn Kim Jong-il promptly used to create a nuclear program....

Is the progressives goal the absolute annihilation of the United States?

Giving $450 mil in aid to Egypt meets resistance? No way, it's not like they committed an act of war against us by blowing up our embassy just 2 weeks ago, or anything.
I love the NSA. It's like having a secret fan-base you will never see, but they're there, watching everything you write and it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that I may be some person's only form of unconstitutional entertainment one night.

My mistake. An ultra Conservative Islamist movement stormed into the US embassy in Cairo and desecrated the US flag in protest of some retarded movie on September 11th of this year. Still not an environment we should be funneling money into.

The US is dependent on foreign oil, it needs the OPEC countries to be stable for trading purposes.
Egypt has always been in an important strategic geographic location when it comes to the Middle East.

You need them more than they need you.

Notice how Libya was of great importance with special forces becoming involved in the war?
Yet Syria is pretty much left alone?

Look at Libya in WW2 they were fighting over strategic oil supplies back then.
And the Egyptian Suez Canal has been fought over countless times.

I think the only time it is acceptable to give foreign aid to countries is when they suffered through a catastrophe. Like Japans' nuclear reactor meltdown+tsunami.. or Haiti's earthquake 2 years ago.

Other than that... no. It is like giving a perfectly able man charity. You don't do that. You give charity to people in need.... who fell on hard times.

Yes. Your article confirms it happened in Libya.
