not all Cops are good or even good at their jobs shocker.
It's illegal to water the hippies now?
Bummer.
Almost as funny as barbecuing the loonies at Waco right? Or is it only okay to applaud state sanctioned violence against people you don't like.
The situation at Davis could have been resolved without pepper spraying anyone in the face, as it was in countless other protests at the time. There was no physical threat or stressful circumstance which required the use of force. The illegal and unjustified attack on the protestors exacerbated the situation rather than defusing it. State sanctioned violence is not a tool to be used on people sitting peacefully on the ground, regardless of whether it annoys other people or not.
Barbequing men women and children at Waco =/= Pepperspraying hippies.
One results in death, the other doesn't even do lasting harm.
Now, if they were spraying actual human beings, it would be different.
Hippies though.... well why not spray 'em. It's probably good for them, keeps that vegetable between their ears from drying out too much.
So I suppose you'd sit back and do nothing if someone pepper sprayed your kids in the face. No lasting harm right?
The protesters don't get to form a blockade to prevent LEOs from arresting folks, either. They don't get to demand those police release the detainees or they can't pass. If the arrest was wrongful, you get to contest it after the event. They weren't just sitting in a line, they were trying to create their own rules and detaining police to do it.
The people sitting on the ground were not detaining anyone. A 2 foot high barrier is not a "blockade", which is quite evident in the video when the police officer steps over the students to pepper spray them.
Whereas I believe hatred for LAW & ORDER have no place in ANY civilization.
In alot of other countries if you protest the government you get shot, run over by tanks or are drug from your home in the dead of night never to be seen again. In America you get pepper sprayed, then you get a lawyer, then you retire.
Wow, where do I sign up for the next pepper spraying? I'll do it for a 10th of what these students got... who am I kidding, I'll do it for 1/25!
True. You know the difference?.... I expect to be accousted, assaulted, beaten, shot, etc... if/when I step outside the law and get caught at it. I understand that potential and I accept it. If the potential response is too problematic for my tastes, I don't step outside the line.
Seriously.
They are probably going to each get about as much money as I make in a year, just for getting pepper sprayed while acting the fool.
You know what I've been through this year, to make my princely salary of less than per capita GDP?
I've been...
Attacked by dogs
Threatened by people
Cut by barbed wire and briars so often I hardly notice anymore.... some of the 'wire was rusty... Don't even mention workman's comp to me, I'd laugh my head off.
Damn near got heatstroke in July.
Damn near got hypothermia in February.
Nearly got run over by stupid drivers more times than I can count.
Blisters on my feet from all the walking.
Got burned on a piece of hot machinery.
Risked exposure to toxic chemicals at a factory.
Worked overtime OFF the clock frequently to do 1.5 men's work without going over 40 paid hours a week, to avoid an ugly visit from Corporate about schedules.
.... hell that ain't even the half of it.
You could pepper spray the **** out of me for what they're getting out of this, and I'd smile all the way to the bank.
First of all, the damages may be meant to be punitive to make sure the university gets the message loud and clear. Secondly, anyone who works off the clock just to satisfy a bosses unrealistic expectations is making a fool of themselves. Of course if the current GOP got their way we would all be indentured servants without any rights to protect us from abusive employers.
Bud, an "ugly visit from Corporate" usually means people getting fired. Maybe you've noticed, jobs aren't exactly falling off trees like ripe pecans just the now.

So you reward your employer for forcing you to break the law and take money out of your own pocket in the process. Until workers start to stand up and refuse to continue to allow their already limited workplace rights to be even further eroded it is just going to get worse. ALL your boss cares about is the money in his pocket and I'm sure he can think up a number of new ways to increase that at your detriment. It is illegal to coerce an employee to work off the clock to avoid paying overtime. To date, Walmart has had to pay out over 700M because of overtime violations. Your continuing to enable this type of activity is only going to encourage your employer to see what else they can get away with.
I believe he is a police officer. I doubt he is forced to stay on the job off the clock, as that is illegal, regardless of field of work. But he does so, because he understands that his salary is paid via taxes, and if their are fewer taxes, because there are fewer people making less money, then there is less payroll for his job. But he also understand that less payroll does not equal less potential or realized crime.
Far be it for me to speak for another person....and I could be 180 off, here. But instead of talking the way you are to him, you outa be calling the dude a saint. Cuz, lord knows, TEACHERS sure as **** don't think like he does.
Based on his description of the job hazards he has faced I am not convinced he is describing the job of a police officer. His statement that the 30k each student receives would equal his yearly salary would also put him well below the average for a LEO(about 60%). Even if he is, it isn't the taxpayer who is the boss coming by that will fire people if he doesn't work off the clock. I don't know about where you live but the police here have no problem making it very well known when they feel they are understaffed. My point was that by working off the clock to appease his boss, he is just encouraging the boss to expect that from others and financially rewarding someone for breaking the law.
