Texas districtís new policy allows educators of either gender to paddle male, female

Texas district’s new policy allows educators of either gender to paddle male, female students - The Washington Post

Like many schools in Texas, “spare the rod and spoil the child” might be considered the motto at Springtown High School. But when two teenage girls there reportedly suffered bruises after being paddled by male assistant principals, some parents complained. They weren’t upset about the punishment itself, but instead that the school violated the policy requiring an educator of the same sex as the student to dole out the paddling.

So the school district has changed its policy — to expand, not abolish, corporal punishment. Board members voted Monday night to let administrators paddle students of the opposite sex, after Superintendent Michael Kelley cited a lack of women administrators to carry out spankings.
"Yeah, yeah," you might be thinking while rolling your eyes. "Texas." But then I came across this later in the article.

Texas is one of 19 states allowing schools to spank students

Well, I am against corporal punishment in general but I can still understand it being used on young children. What good does spanking a teenager do? And why the hell is the school doing it?

Young children are the ones you really want to avoid using corporal punishment on as it leads to behavioral problems later in life. There is a link between non-abusive corporal punishment and antisocial tendencies later on, as well as increased risk of substance abuse.

Study links physical punishment of kids to adult mental disorders

    Also...

In "Corporal Punishment by Mothers and Child's Cognitive Development: A Longitudinal Study" (Family Research Laboratory, University of New Hampshire, Durham, NH; a paper presented at the 14th World Congress of Sociology, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, 1998), Murray A. Straus and Mallie J. Paschall found that corporal punishment was associated with a child's failure to keep up with the average rate of cognitive development.

    snip

COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT. Straus and Paschall found that the more prevalent the corporal punishment, the greater the decrease in cognitive ability. Considering other studies, which showed that talking to children, including infants, is associated with increased neural connections in the brain and cognitive functioning, the researchers hypothesized that if parents are not using corporal punishment to discipline their child, they are very likely verbally interacting with that child, thus positively affecting cognitive development.

Decreased cognitive abilities is hardly the result anyone wants from sending their children to school.

I disagree with officials paddling the opposite gender (but in private, between adults, I heartily endorse it....*naughty schoolgirls* *drool*)

...I can't be the only one who's now thinking about naughty schoolgirls who need to be paddled

There is nothing wrong with licks. Especially when it is by choice.

Absolutely nothing wrong with kids getting paddled at school. If they got paddled a bit more at HOME, maybe the schools wouldn't need to do it. Corporal Punishment is a good and necessary part of the upbringing of a child, and always has been. It's not like these kids are being spanked on a bare bottom folks.

It should be the kids choice with a release from the parents already on file.
If not then, the kids choice as agreed to by the parent.

I missed the bus one day. Walked 10 miles to school, I was late. Choice between detention and licks. I chose licks.

Would it be wrong for the teachers to be "paddled" if they misbehave? What is the moral difference between using violence to punish a 17 year old student and a 25 year old teacher?
