Unarmed people power drums Libya's jihadists out of Benghazi

Unarmed people power drums Libya's jihadists out of Benghazi | World news | The Observer

As fires blazed and protesters danced in the ruined compound of a vanquished jihadist militia, I watched as the citizens of the Libyan city of Benghazi staged a dramatic display of raw people power.Numbed by the murder of an American ambassador in their city, furious with jihadist militias lording it over them and frustrated by a government too chaotic and intimidated to react, ordinary Benghazians took matters into their own hands.

    Damn Islamist Arab Spring....

Libya had an enlightened constitution before Qaddafi.. It guaranteed equality under the law regardless of creed, ethnicity, tribal affiliation or economic status.

How many people remember a constitution that ended ~45 years ago? They'd have to be old enough to read and understand it, say 15, minimum. That makes them 60+ now. Anyone who was an adult, working under that constitution? 70+

And that excludes the (stunningly naive) assumption that reality was as on paper.

King Idris was an able leader and under him literacy flourished.

Well, I am sure the people who remember the constitution told their children about it. 45 years isn't too long. I learned a lot about WWII from my grandparents before I learned about it in school. It takes a lot longer than 45 years to change a culture.
