Obama signs order outlining emergency Internet control

Obama signs order outlining emergency Internet control | Internet & Media - CNET News

President Barack Obama signed an executive order last week that could give the U.S. government control over the Internet.
With the wordy title "Assignment of National Security and Emergency Preparedness Communications Functions," this order was designed to empower certain governmental agencies with control over telecommunications and the Web during natural disasters and security emergencies.

According to The Verge, critics of the order are concerned with Section 5.2, which is a lengthy part outlining how telecommunications and the Internet are controlled. It states that the Secretary of Homeland Security will "oversee the development, testing, implementation, and sustainment" of national security and emergency preparedness measures on all systems, including private "non-military communications networks." According to The Verge, critics say this gives Obama the on/off switch to the Web.
Sounds pretty leftwing to me. I don't trust the govt with stuff like this. Legislation like this was blocked last year, so why is Obama going against the will of the people?

How many people realize executive orders are not actually in the Constitution at all? I can't imagine many, but still, it is not. Anyway, its not surprising that it has turned into a way for the president to act like a king and bypass congress and enact laws. Interesting how it goes out of its way to say he DOES NOT have that power, but somehow the courts still say he does.

I also think its funny how there is no power mentioned that allows the federal government to do anything even close to this, but I bet the supreme court will say its all good.

The government, left and right, want control over the internet badly. They will look for any excuse to get it.
You know the time is right to take control, we gotta take offense against the status quo

What in the world does shutting off the web have to do with emergency communications? The web is NOT, I repeat, NOT, the internet. Nor is AOL the internet.

It's frighteningly easy to take down the web and the internet, just cut the wire coming from the 13 root nameservers. The only problem for the government is that those machines are run by volunteers who routinely reject government offers to put them on the payroll.

Oh come on now, I'm sure they'll give it right back just the way they found it.

Why do they need to do anything with telecommunications, during or after a natural disaster?
The internet is not going to make them worse.
