You only need to lose the cooling water supply circuit through power loss or pump loss and you get a meltdown scenario occuring soon after (within about 45 minutes of cooling loss and reactor core bundle begins to overheat and commence melting)

Both the Chernobyl and 3 mile Island disasters were not caused by tsunamis and earth quakes.

And all it takes is for a derranged plant operator or a terrorist act and a reactos core meltdown in the US is reality

Records released since 9/11 show that the initial preferred target of the Hijackers was the Nuclear Power plant just outside New York city. But they decided against it because they thought that it would be heavily protected and maybe gaurded by jets or missles. This reality was that Nuclear power plants were not protected at all in the USA - apart from the no fly zone above and near a nuclear plant. And I doubt the Hijackers would hae worried about that precaution.

Are we supposed to discuss how evil nuke plants are and start singing the praises of solar, or...what? Is this story a spring-board for "alternative" energy?

Appalling as it may be to you, I didn't have any specific debate topic in mind when I posted it.

Quite simply, my reason was that I was working in Harrisburg when the event (if it can be called that with a straight face) happened, and thus it was interesting to me...so I shared.

    Now, as to the article…
I’ve heard several news reports on the event since, and it sounds to me like all that happened was a cooling pump failing and the reactor shutting down as (I assume) it was intended to do (since, it kinda needs it’s cooling to avoid the meltdown bit )...

The not very serious earthquake outside DC scrammed the Lake Anna Nuclear reactors almost instantaneously when there was no damage, no spike, no control loss or no anything other than a groundshake. I don't mind them so much as some (just as long as they are not in my backyard LOL).

Yeah right, you posted this story on a hostile debate forum, and now you're trying to hide your motive like we've never seen anyone do that before. So let's go Mr. Pro-Warmer, let's hear it.

This is clear proof that Obama will win the election. I am not sure how yet, but I am going to come up with something to prove this is proof.

This interested me because I'm currently working in Harrisburg, and will be tomorrow.

I like the whole "worst nuclear accident" part as it was only a scare and prompted many changes to our regulatory commissions. As for this...looks like the safety interlocks worked. Huzzah!
