Well.. its seems to me that this guy thought he was a mutaween.. and he was over the line.. The girls were wearing abaya.. and historically Iranian women are quite fashionable.

Like this.

Yes, but did you read the article. It said this happened in a "small" village, not in the city where women can get away with a little more. Not to mention, the girls were "asked" to cover themselves up. It's ridiculous Sharon. If you can't see that and why that is, then I'm sorry.

dont teach me the middle east please.........you are lying..

You are talking to a Wahhabist here, Medusa.

Although the info says female from Georgia, it sounds too much like a man from Saudi Arabia to be much else.

Possibly the conventions in Turkey differ from those in the European world, but "You are lying" could easily be taken as an insult here, and would be regarded as a personal attack.

Perhaps "I believe you may be mistaken." might be a more acceptable way of expressing doubt? :)

In all the years I have posted on this, and other, boards (and I have been posting on the 'net since I was 12,) I have never reported anyone to the mods. I was issuing a friendly word of advice - but take it as you wish. :)

Fair enough, but the British have a saying - "The proof of the pudding is in the eating." :)

what does it have to do with turks?

you insult my nation!

Why don't you stand up and do something about it? Aren't you a Muslim, living in a Muslim country?

When a person makes an untrue statement knowingly, the word to describe such an action is "lie."

I think she does something about it every day by being who she is and being much more clear in denouncing the Islamists than scores and scores of posters here who do nothing but defend Islamism.

When people defend the Islamists as they do, who do you think has the most to lose, if not a liberal Muslim?

Do you really want to continue with this?

I was not implying that Turks as a nationality are impolite, or that we 'great westerners' are outstandingly polite - one has only to attend a football match to see quite how impolite we may be. However, can you deny that calling someone a liar on a public forum may be considered very impolite in any society? I know nothing of Turkish society (a deficiency I would like to rectify when I am older,) so I thought there might perhaps be some cultural excuse for your calling another member a liar on this forum - hence my opening sentence regarding Turkey. LOL, I was actually trying (not very successfully) to express myself diplomatically. :)

british diplomacy?

Really? You're talking about a culture that is extremely abusive to woman! So some old cleric comes along, someone who preaches and fully supports this oppression of women, get his ass beat by one is pretty much the definition of justice.

I agree whole heartedly with the second sentence but not the first. It does annoy me that people see such actions as a product of something inherently Iranian or even inherently Muslim when you would never have seen such things under Reza Palavi or Mossadegh. And just for clarification

I think the mullahs are bad
I think the mullahs are bad
I think the mullahs are bad
I think the mullahs are bad.

That is so, however, there are a couple of pre-conditions to making that offensive accusation legitimately.

The first being that the statement must have been empirically proven to be untrue.

The second being incontrovertible evidence that the person concerned has made the statement in the full knowledge it was not fact.

Both burdens of proof are much too high to be adequately addressed on a medium such as this. We do not know each other personally, and we have no way of knowing the extent of another poster's experience, nor the depth of his/her research into the matter under discussion. We can only estimate the balance of probability, and there is a significant possibility that we may have misunderstood something.

But my principle point concerns civilised and constructive discussion, and I do not believe that gratuitously impolite accusations contribute much to that.

I'd hope as much. In truth, I'd be rather surprised if you weren't quite a bit more polite than we are.

Its crap.... She was selling books and went for the sensational.

It's far from crap. Do you feel the movie is unfair to the Iranians? You do understand that the people who helped Betty escape were also Iranian.......

Betty Mahmoody's story of perseverence and bravery is remarkable and she actually now travels the US telling her story . She is also the President and co-founder of One World-For Children, an organisation created to promote understanding between cultures and to protect children from the potential dark side of bi-cultural marriages.

british diplomacy?

LOL! Yes flawed as it may be, British diplomacy will always be superior to Turkish (or British) impoliteness and insult.
