When a person makes an untrue statement knowingly, the word to describe such an action is "lie."

I think she does something about it every day by being who she is and being much more clear in denouncing the Islamists than scores and scores of posters here who do nothing but defend Islamism.

When people defend the Islamists as they do, who do you think has the most to lose, if not a liberal Muslim?

I was not implying that Turks as a nationality are impolite, or that we 'great westerners' are outstandingly polite - one has only to attend a football match to see quite how impolite we may be. However, can you deny that calling someone a liar on a public forum may be considered very impolite in any society? I know nothing of Turkish society (a deficiency I would like to rectify when I am older,) so I thought there might perhaps be some cultural excuse for your calling another member a liar on this forum - hence my opening sentence regarding Turkey. LOL, I was actually trying (not very successfully) to express myself diplomatically.

I agree whole heartedly with the second sentence but not the first. It does annoy me that people see such actions as a product of something inherently Iranian or even inherently Muslim when you would never have seen such things under Reza Palavi or Mossadegh. And just for clarification

That is so, however, there are a couple of pre-conditions to making that offensive accusation legitimately.

The first being that the statement must have been empirically proven to be untrue.

The second being incontrovertible evidence that the person concerned has made the statement in the full knowledge it was not fact.

Both burdens of proof are much too high to be adequately addressed on a medium such as this. We do not know each other personally, and we have no way of knowing the extent of another poster's experience, nor the depth of his/her research into the matter under discussion. We can only estimate the balance of probability, and there is a significant possibility that we may have misunderstood something.

But my principle point concerns civilised and constructive discussion, and I do not believe that gratuitously impolite accusations contribute much to that.

I'd hope as much. In truth, I'd be rather surprised if you weren't quite a bit more polite than we are.

It's far from crap. Do you feel the movie is unfair to the Iranians? You do understand that the people who helped Betty escape were also Iranian.......

Betty Mahmoody's story of perseverence and bravery is remarkable and she actually now travels the US telling her story . She is also the President and co-founder of One World-For Children, an organisation created to promote understanding between cultures and to protect children from the potential dark side of bi-cultural marriages.
