France to close embassies in fear of cartoon backlash - FRANCE - FRANCE 24

The French foreign ministry announced Wednesday that France will close 20 of its embassies in Muslim countries this Friday following the publication of controversial Prophet Mohammed cartoons by satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo. Major protests in the Muslim world generally take place after Friday prayers.
The illustrations, which show the Prophet Mohammed naked and refer to the incendiary US-made film which has been fueling deadly unrest among Muslim communities for over a week, hit newsstands across France on Wednesday.
The magazine's editor, Stephane Charbonnier, told reporters that the pictures, which are printed on the back page, will "shock those who will want to be shocked."

It's embarassing how this stilted religion and its global henchmen are holding free speech hostage in every corner of the world. This is what happens when you appease deranged people. It only emboldens them.

Who is appeasing them? "France" (in quotes because of course in the West, none of the governments are actually doing anything) did this last year. It's become pretty par for the course to make fun of Muslims about being so absurdly sensitive, and every few months, someone in the West blatantly mocks Muhammad. Doesn't really seem like appeasement at all.

On the one hand I love that they refuse to bend to the will of those who would love nothing more than to crush free speech. Good for them. On the other hand, they totally have a death wish, lol!

No one is being held hostage. Should there be a threat of some kind or suspicion of retaliation proper precautions must be taken by the host country and embassy personnel. This is no more than fodder for fear mongers and cowards.

At some point, even Muslims are going to get numb to it and grow up. It's just going to keep coming, anyway.

Again, kinda the opposite of appeasement.

The first reaction of the French is to retreat? Not much of a shocker, there.

I think it's the right thing to do. I'm sorry, but if the countries hosting our embassies can't keep our people safe? The hell with them. This fiasco has cost American taxpayers millions. People are dead. For what? So we can let other countries **** on us? Our country should follow suit and so should every western nation. This ought to be a wake-up call. That it isn't? Is our failure.

I agree and then we should inform each of those nations that since we cannot safely operate in their nations that they must leave ours also. That would only be fair. I suspect they would NOT want to do that and would take the job of securing those embassies on their own soil a whole lot more seriously.

If the U.S had retreated like what France did Ambassador Stevens life (and others) could have been saved. Pride is at stake?

Pride is at stake?

It is the pride of those stupid savages who riot any time they see disparaging mention of their dead warlord that is the issue here.

The reason they go on their rampages is that they have been force fed a bunch of supremacist mumbo Jumbo, but have come face to face with the fact that they are not in the least bit supreme. In fact, the western world is so much more productive at every conceivable level that it isn't even funny.

At that point when the Islamic world as a whole starts to SHOW the same sort of deference it demands, and desists with the childish displays of pique brought on by ignorance, superstition and self-centeredness, then perhaps it can begin to advance Until then, it is only their own culture that dooms them to failure.

What the Islamic world really needs are a bunch of Kemel Ataturks willing to take them kicking and screaming from the dark ages and into the modern world. Until such a time, it looks to be just more of the same.

No matter how you curse and swear you can't change them.

The challenge lies in not letting them drag the world into darkness by changing us.

and btw -- I did not cusre or swear once in that post, so you might try a little honesty, o.k.?

Damn Greenies and Democrats make it necessary to deal with those murderous, theocratic tyrannts for the oil of the region.

It takes freedom of speech to change them. We had "Radio Free Europe." We should do so there.

IF we became energy independent and pulled out of the region, the economic collapse and lack of our presence would keep they well occupied killing each other.

Wouldn't hurt them at all.. They have been looking East since 9-11.

Gee, the Froggies are retreating in a cut and run instead of taking a stand. Is this really surprising to anyone?

They have to close 20 embassies because of a cartoon? That's ridiculous. I'm not sure who's dumber. The mag for posting a cartoon they KNOW will cause hassles for their government, injury and possibly death for embassy workers. Or the Muslims in those countries for being so easily baited, and actually getting riled up over a cartoon. It's a comedy of errors that's not so funny.

and I would add to that wisdom the admonition not to also let us be suckered or goaded into military action which will take us into a different kind of darkness.

And that would be wrong - according to the BBC, the French are enhancing security at critical embassies. The embassies will be closed on Friday only according to France 24.

  • Security was being enhanced noticeably at the embassy in the Egyptian capital Cairo, as French schools and cultural centres in the country were set to close on Thursday
  • The embassy in the Indonesian capital Jakarta announced on its website it would close on Friday
  • French schools in Tunisia were due to close from Wednesday afternoon until Monday morning, and the embassy in Tunis will be closed on Friday

muslim activists in Europe are the kings of welfare, special privilege and victimization. There is no middle ground with them. And they keep pushing and pushing... and for fear of being called "racists" the people suffer.

What a ridiculous situation, which the West must fight with all its might!

We've been trying to explain Brit humor for a long time. Perhaps if the radicals saw Monty, Benny and some stuff like that then they'd just shake their head as well.

I'm coming more and more to the conclusion that, in the 21st century, embassies are an anachronism. They are simply no longer needed. We have instantaneous communication with foriegn countries these days and it seems to me that parking a bunch of your citizens in the middle of hostile territory really doesn't accomplish a hell of a lot.

Really vital communications are done Head of State to Head of State anyway. Embassies merely serve as handy targets or as centers for mischief makers or spies.
