Average retail gasoline prices have more than doubled under President Obama, according to government statistics, rising from $1.84 per gallon to $3.85 per gallon.

The average gasoline price is calculated by the Energy Information Agency, and shows that over the past 43 months of President Obama’s term retail gasoline prices have more than doubled, rising from an average of $1.84 per gallon to $3.85 per gallon.

big win for secty chu!

“Somehow,” Chu said, “we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe.”

almost halfway there!

I would love to ask in what gas station in the US were gas prices 1.84 per gallon in the past 20 years? The lowest i have seen gas prices in 20 years is 2.80s and that was a month or two ago.

can anyone out there say they have seen 1.84 cent gas since 2000?

They were below $1.80 in 2008 here in CT.

yeah..i've seen 1.84 since 2000... in Nevada, and Texas

I mainly purchase diesel though.. which is significant higher than regular unleaded... filling up my truck runs me about 170 bucks.

In the past 20 years? Back to 1992?

Let's see . . . December 2001, I paid 91 cents a gallon in NE Charlotte. It didn't breach $1.50 until spring 2003. $1.85 was still outrageous in March 2004.

In mid-2006 I paid $1.98 in Fayetteville.

In December 2008, I paid $1.53 in Myrtle Beach.

Perhaps you should check on these things before you post.

When I lived in Chattanooga in the summer 1998 I used to drive across the border because there was a station in GA that had gas for 76 cents a gallon. It was 90 cents in Tennessee, what a ripoff!

And credit to the OP for acknowledging that the GOP deserves credit for the market crash and ensuring panic that cut gas prices in half in the final months of 2008. Where we differ is that I don't think that was a good thing for the country.

Now here is a guy with good maintenance records. As an auto repair shop owner you are the best kind of customer.:peace

Oh yeah.

I forgot that lever in the oval office that controls the price of a globally produced and traded commodity!

That seems pretty harsh considering that he actually asked if anyone had paid less than $2.80, and didn't claim that lower prices were false.

He very much was doing this.

There is that matter that each state imposes its own taxes on fuel which causes some variation and then there is the delivery cost - how far is a gas station from a refinery plus geographic location - Here in Palm Beach County, regular gas runs from $4.02 a gallon in Boca Raton to $3.79 in Lake Worth although stations close to I-95 exits charge $3.92

A significant portion of the price increase is due to speculation in the oil futures market (take that out, and gas would be around $2 a gallon). However, the fundamentals of oil production have also changed to a considerable degree. Why anyone at this point doesn't believe that we've passed the peak of worldwide oil production is beyond me...

So let me get this stright. For a few weeks around the end of 2008 gas prices dropped a hell of a lot in some select areas of the US? Then they pretty much rose back up to normal levels after? So there was not this long time under bush where gas prices were around a 1.80 all across the country?

First this seems to be partially a state issue then as this is not country wide. Second this seems to be also an issue of gas company gouging which is not something obama controls, and certtainly won't be interfered with by Mitt who wants to deregulate any price controls in place. Yes, gas in certain states is cheaper, and that is due to local taxes on it being different, along with gas companies altering price drastically based on location. When i used to live in Ny there was over 50 cent difference in gas prices if you drove fifty or more miles out of NYC for gas. Worse yet you could drrive just a couple of miles over the NJ border and get gas pumped for you for a whole lot less than you could get anywhere in the area.

To blame obama for the gas companies making record profits is silly. maybe there were these low gas prices in 2008 in some specific locations of the country, but looking at the locations i have to wonder if there is reasons those states are bankrupt and sucking the fed's teet. Now that you have told me the specific locations where these gas prices dipped way lower than anyplace else, please explain to us how obama controls state gas taxes, and when we elected him chairman of exon mobile to stop hammering us so hard with such obvious gasoline markups.

The last time I saw gas prices at that low a rate was when bush Sr. was president. Of course when his son was president i do remember seeing gas prices over 4 dollars for low grade which I have yet to see anywhere outside of NYC since his time. Still i guess Obama could do something about it by capping the profit margin of gas companies, but then we would have that **** fit over government intervention.

the problem is when you have something people rely so heavily on, like the gasoline for their vehicles, the companies that sell those products have some pretty decent leeway in the profits they get from those products. When they see people will pay a certain amount per gallon then they charge that much. When you have price collusion like we do with the major gasoline retailers this causes them to raise prices and make more money. It is not something the free market can fight against without some influence over the companies that provide these products. So what i really want to know is if you have an actual reason why the guy who is about getting the biggest profits he can for the rich at the expense of everyone else is going to tell the gas companies to lower their prices? Or does this all boil down to the fact neither obama or romney will do much for this problem at all?

I haven't seen gas bellow 2 per gallon since highschool, lol. I've live in SC, FL, and CT since then. The biggest thing that affect gas prices is the tax. If you have to pay .50 - .75 cents per gallon in taxes, and those taxes go up as a result of unemployment and low property values with fewer property owners, not much leeway in gas prices.

Gas prices fell to a 5-year low in 2008 due to the recession. It is entirely unsurprising that they have since returned to more normal levels. But don't like context get in the way of your partisanship.

Sucks, doesn't it? Diesel fuel is one of those odd items where there is no volume discount, rather a volume increase.

When people talk about how much it costs to fuel their car, they don't also realize how much the radically high diesel prices affect the cost of every single item they buy in any store and that doubles for food for both the agriculture fuel costs AND the delivery costs. The cost to people of double fuel costs is NOT just in filling up their cars. It is dramatically increasing the cost of everything - particularly food.

Fuel costs and inflation is a MASSIVE tax against the poor and low income.

$3.85 and over $4.00 for diesel is not normal. But I bet you LIKE poor people unable to afford food as the prices radically go up for increases in fuel costs.

yep...i commuted from Gastonia to Charlotte from '92-'02......gas was around a buck or less

Yes, I obviously like it, that's totally reasonable Joko.

Is this what anti-Obama attacks have come to? Statistic cherry picking and demonization?

Oil is traded world wide in US dollars which have been driven down in value due to obama's quantitative easing. The more dollars he prints the less they are worth and the more of them it takes to buy a barrel of oil. Add to this his anti fossil fuels drilling policies and rhetoric and here we are, you knock the hell out of a hundred dollar bill every time you fill up. High gas prices equal a sluggish economy, works every time it's tried. Nice work obama.

Gas was around $1.10 for most of the '90s.

Huh. There was that spike, and then prices plummeted in 2008. I wonder what happened around then that might have caused the price of a commodity to drop. Supply didn't skyrocket, I wonder if demand dropped? Hmm. Now what could have caused a substantial decrease in demand for a product... around that time period...

Come now Deuce...

We all know that the only thing that has effect on gas prices is Obamas secret lever in the Oval Office and raises and lowers the price.

Silly Deuce.
