8,786,049: Yet Another Record For Americans Collecting Disability

median household income from january, 2000, to december, 2007, the start of the recession, rose a dismal .8%

from the start of the recession til its official end in the summer of 09, middle class income fell 2.6%

since then, under the obama "recovery," 3 years and 3 months, median household income collapsed a staggering 4.8%

it is what it is, what clinton calls arithmetic

So the LA Times is accurate when it reports the median income falling but to be disregarded when it discloses that the trend toward low paying service jobs has been going on for three decades? How many unemployment extensions were there during the latest recovery? Why is it a surprise that the same mid income jobs that have been replaced with lower paying ones for most of my lifetime aren't ever going to come back? Apparently you haven't spent much time in the real world before the events of 2007. If you were a low or mid level manager or other salaried white collar worker in their 40s or 50s and lost your job, your chances of finding equivalent employment were grim ten years ago. Same thing if you are a blue collar factory worker whose plant closed down. The town I was in in Indiana used to have a large RCA(later Thompson) plant. I met scores of people who once made 50k or more a year who were currently working at $9 or $10 an hour jobs. It's also a case of supply and demand. You really think companies are filling positions that once paid 40k a year when they have dozens of qualified people who will take the job for 25k? Anyone who has worked in the private sector knows employers are very opportunistic during any poor job market especially when it comes to cutting or freezing wages and benefits.
