The murder of an ambassador is political, by its very nature, unless it's a freak accidental death, or a random nut who kills him.

I say we hire Blackwater to guard the embassies from now on. They did right by the State Department before.

Every nation in the world must trust the lives of its diplomats to the security of the host nation. There is always a balance between security and being able to actually do your job as a diplomat. In attempting to achieve that balance there is risk involved. Diplomacy doesnít happen INSIDE the walls of our embassies and consulates. Here is a newsflash for those who havenít come to the conclusion on their own: Just like enlisting in the military, joining the Foreign Service is risky. There is a reason FS Officers receive hazardous duty pay in countries like these.

The militants knew where the safehouse was.

This could have been bad luck but also due to a security leak/betrayal of trust.

The most dangerous region in the world to be a US citizen is the Middle East. In a volatile country that has just had a revolution and the vacuum of power has created a devolved to local tribal militia's type of governance what were you expecting to happen? The area has violent hardline anti-western groups. Did no one hear of the recent smashing up of WW2 British war graves? The police stated they could do nothing against the powerful heavily armed group involved. Security there is fragile at best.

Remember the cartoon from that small nordic country? The reaction was obvious.

The Ambassador should have never been put in such a sitting duck position. He should have been in a protectable, near the coast, non-urban fort protected by US marines until the heat died down. If not just out of the country all together.

It was neglectful, naive, and crazy to leave him in an uncontrolled city with no military backup which has hardline anti-American militas as well as its moderate elements.

If your being attacked in over 20 countries. Your flag being burned repeatedly in everyone. logically you must accept - these folks don't like us we need to take extra security measures.

An internal review of the policy to leave thats man's life in the hands of an untested militia needs to be undertaken. Its near criminal.
Well, ya can't really be an ambassador that way.

Re: More details emerge on U.S. ambassador's last moments

    Ahem! ... 9/11 was PLANNED!!! ...

Get REAL, will you, please .. The world is a VERY dangerous place and inspite of the threats Americans face abroad due to years ... decades ... of our LEADING from the front ... there are not enough men and women in uniform to defend EVERY outpost ... There is soooo much violence in Africa ... almost EVERYWHERE ... We have limited resources and our Treasury can not protect EVERYONE from EVERY terrorist ... Sad to say but IF another war-mongerer gets into the White House like Governor Romney who wants MORE Defense spending building war ships ... we WILL take a GIANT step backward ... WARS are not the way forward ... and IF people REALLY thought about what they are advocating ... they would realize just how WISE and thought-filled OUR great President is ...

He is a VISIONARY ... a man of DESTINY which the WISE folks on the Nobel Committee could SEE was the man to lead us ALL "FORWARD" ...

PLEASE OPEN YOUR EYES ... do NOT vote for more of the same as in going BACKWARD to the FAILED POLICIES of the Bush Administration ... Policies which are more responsible for the plight we find ourselves in today ... DEEPLY in debt for not paying for the BUSH TAX CUTS ... for TWO WARS (one completely UNnecessary) ... ALL paid for by US ... SAD, indeed ... when people FAIL TO SEE what REALLY got us in the pickle we are in ...

    PLEASE OPEN YOUR EYES!!!

I guess since 9/11 was CLEARLY planned ... the buck then CLEARLY stopped with Bush by YOUR logic ...

This is a dangerous world ... and IF we engage EVERY credible threat, we wouldn't have enough men and women in uniform to DEFEND us or anyone else ... and we would BE at war ALL over the world ... OPEN YOUR EYES ...

That kind of foreign policy would cause our nation to be bankrupted in short order and lose ALL respect in the world ... not to mention the loss of precious lives ... Come on! ... OPEN YOUR EYES and USE some LOGIC, PLEASE!!!
