Top US military officer calls pastor over film

Hell, let's just beat the **** out of everyone that says something we don't like. That's basically what you're condoning.
What are you talking about? Do you understand the difference between a request and violent coercion?

Would you say, then, that acting responsibly trumps the other basic "rights" in this country?

Careful now...
Nobody is "trumping" anyone's rights. In what way has this person's rights been infringed? You don't have a right to not be ridiculed for your life decisions or choice of expression. The government isn't threatening this man or forcibly compelling him to do anything, only asking him to think about the consequences of his actions. People here are completing blowing this out of proportion.

The government clearly cannot prohibit the exercise of speech. But the constitution does not prohibit the government from challenging the views of others, expressing its own, or requesting that people act in certain ways for the good of others.

Having one of the top generals in the US Army calling to ask you to curb your opinions certainly must have a chilling effect, and he would certainly not have made this call without encouragement from those higher up.

I expect his taxes will be audited for the rest of his life.

It only has a chilling effect if you assume the top general is then going to take some sort of unconstitutional action against you. Call me back when that happens. The constitution doesn't require that we coddle the paranoid.

Expect what you want, but it makes you nothing more than your average anti-government conspiracy nut.

For people allegedly so concerned about protecting what makes America different from these third world countries, they don't seem to act like they think the US government is any different than some of these dictatorships to begin with.

One of the heads of the largest armed forces in the world calls your home and suggest you keep your opinions to yourself doesn't have a chilling effect? How often does that ever happen? Is this what top Generals are designated to do? Why get the military involved with the opinions of a private citizen?

You think the General took it upon himself to call this hapless Florida pastor? There is no secret conspiracy here. It is quite open. The leader of the US military is calling the home of a private citizen and advising him to be silent.

The action of this General, and his superiors, is exactly what happens in third world countries.

Yeah, right, with an unconstitutional libbo/socialist pro-Muslim in office? I think it is more likely that he will be nominated for promotion than to have his taxes audited.

My apologies. I worded that poorly. I was referring to the Florida Pastor.

Oh him, you mean they don't already have a sub-office collocated with his church? I figured they started building and manning it right after he said he was going to burn copies of Satans Bible. Oops, sorry, did that slip out, I meant the koran.

Misogyny?

So you are saying that Muslim men hate women?

That is not factual. I've read nothing to suggest that any significant percent of the Muslims in the world riot. In the U.S. we have riots after damn near any professional sports team wins or loses a national title. We had a riot when they fired Joe Paterno at Penn State. Are the 2.6 million Muslims in America characterized by a propensity to riot? No.

Of course that won't effect the selective viewing of the world which people like Grant take.

They won't even take stuff like this into account.

Sure, do you understand that a request, coming from a government official in an official capacity, sure looks like coercion? It's not just some guy, it's a top military officer.

As much as I agree with and respect people like these sign-holders, at the end of the day, they're just signs. They don't actually stop the Muslim violence and they don't go after any of the people or groups responsible. The next time someone draws a cartoon or makes a movie or drops a book, those people will be out killing more innocent people and burning more buildings.

In a month or less idiots here in the U.S. will be shouting and screaming that Muslims don't show any outrage at the attack. We know that isn't true. They'll still say it.

How do you know that Muslims are not going after the people who stormed the consulate and killed 4 Americans? If it happened here and Christian nutters attacked a consulate from another nation and killed 4 people what exactly would YOU do?

The Intrade reaction is very interesting. Apparently, these events have given Obusha a boost and have cut down Romney's chances substantially. I really don't know what to make of that....
Barack Obama to be re-elected President in 2012
66.6%
CHANCE
Last prediction was: $6.66 / share
Today's Change: +$0.18 (+2.8%)

Mitt Romney to be elected President in 2012
33.3%
CHANCE
Last prediction was: $3.33 / share
Today's Change: -$0.22 (-6.2%)

Can anyone explain this to me? I just discussed this with my son over dinner and 3we couldn't puzzle it out. We're both voting for Johnson BTW.....

I understand why the General made the call.... but I don't agree that he should have.

it is simply not right to have the top General of the wolds best military call up a private citizen and intimidate him to chill out on his speech. ( the intimidation comes from his station, not his words or demeanor.. i'm sure he was polite on the phone)

good intentions, bad judgement.

Just postulating so no harsh reactions please....

Doesn't this film seem to be crying fire in a crowded theater? It's cost lives, done harm around the world and the film itself is moronic and of no art value. Apparently the entire purpose was to cause outrage and boy has it ever succeeded.

I believe the film achieved more than the producer ever dreamed possible, but the results were indeed his intent. Some fools live to be offended. They are easily manipulated by other fools.

the "art value" is in the eye of the beholder..

i mean, a movie that is inflammatory towards Islam is not art.. but a sculpture of Jesus made of feces is?.... art really is in the eye of the beholder.

I haven't seen the movie... but a movie being critical of something is most likely protected speech here in the US ( a death sentence in some of the more backwards countries)

in any event, the movie makers ,IMO, are blameless... the responsibility for the violence and death lies squarely on the shoulders of those whom perpetrated the acts... not ISlam, not the movie, not the great satan.. the asshats who did it.

Exactly. The Life of Brian was a very popular film and no one went nuts over it. A relatively small number of twisted idiots in the Middle East were simply looking for an excuse.

Liberals like to lose their money?

Then you'd see the argument that murdering Christians nutjobs are "the exception to the rule" when they shoot up planned parenthood while murdering Muslim nutjobs are the norm while peaceful ones are the exception.
