Thousands of Egyptian demonstrators tore down the Stars and Stripes flag at the US embassy in Cairo, replacing it with an Islamic flag on the 11th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States

It looks like in response to this attack is an apology from the state department about whatever made the attackers mad. Odd.

Obama gave Israel Iron Dome to increase their security and increased their foreign aid. I suppose you were not aware of that.

BBC News - US official dies in Libya consulate attack in Benghazi

A US official has been killed and others wounded after militiamen stormed the US consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi, security officials say. It is believed the protest was held over a US-produced film that is said to be insulting to the Prophet Muhammad. The building is said to have burnt down after being set alight by protesters. It is thought nobody was in the consulate at the time. Protests have also been held at the US embassy in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

Thats okay Clinton went around Congress and released money to Egypt......so Egypt could get their act togther. Seems it didn't matter where the money came from with the Egyptians. Just as long as they could get the money!

The protesters were contained and any deaths/injuries would have accelerated and intensified the violence.

"Dozens of riot police lined up along the embassy walls. They did not stop protesters who continued to climb up the wall and stand on it, chanting. But it appeared they were no longer going into the embassy compound."

They breached the embassy wall, so obviously they weren't contained. They should have never been allowed to make it across the wall. This is an attack on American soil and the ambassador sat back and did nothing to stop it.

It wouldn't accomplish anything that's why, sure you could kill a few protestors but ultimately just anger them all the more and increase the potential for violence. There's no indication that after they bounded the wall that any further attempt was made to get inside the embassy itself.

According to the BBC and other sources salafists, a type of hardline fundamentalist and often violent Muslim belief group, were involved and perhaps motivated the attack. BBC News - Egypt protesters breach US embassy over 'insulting' film

What needs to be done is work with the Egyptian authorities to crack down on these guys by influencing them through diplomatic means, a carrot and stick approach, the US gives aid to Egypt and if Egypt cannot guarantee our embassy's security then that aid because leverage. There are ways to get Egypt to work with us against this hardliner portion of their population, and I'll tell you nothing would come of bloodshed by our Marines in the embassy expect further problems.

So, appeasement is the newest national security strategy?

It's time for some retaliation.

You know, not so long ago we saw hundreds of thousands of young people demonstrating in Tahrir Square. They were not demonstrating against the United States, they were not demonstrating against Israel and they were not demonstrating against the West.

They were demonstrating for something a lot of us take for granted. That is democracy. I just really, really, really hope that these extremists will not be allowed to define what is acceptable behavior in a secular democracy. If they are, it is a shameful period in the history of western civilization and a major step backward for those that fought so hard and died for something better.

Today should be about remembering the 9/11 victims, their families, and the heroes who made so many sacrafices that day. We should not let these actions, as despicable as they are, overshadow the significance of today. They are not worthy.

I agree with Krauthammer... "Go to hell" and that message should be delivered at 2900 FPS from the muzzle of a marine M-4A1

So, appeasement is the newest national security strategy?

Cracking down is appeasement? Tell me what do you think is the best way to go after the individuals who planned and coordinated this incident? I can tell you that the Marines opening up on the protesters isn't going to solve anything, you and I both know the real ring leaders and planners aren't the guys coming over the walls first where the greatest danger lies. And killing a bunch of them is only going to anger more Egyptians which will force their government to be less cooperative with us, and since we can't exactly go hunting for these guys out in the streets of Egypt why don't we work with their government which obviously doesn't want this as much as we don't want it? The locals know the "human terrain" better than we do, and actually have legal jurisdiction to go after these people.

Killing pissed off mob members isn't going to accomplish anything except give them some martyrs and make the mob bigger.

Appeasement is when you give your adversary a concession in agreement for them not doing something, I'm not suggesting we give them anything at all except our full attention and go about getting back at them in an intelligent and productive way.

That is where it stopped. What then shoot everyone? That would have accomplished nothing and wold have incited more violence.

If the Egyptian Police cannot handle the job. Then the Egyptian Military knowing 911 was coming round the corner. Should have been prepared and remained proactive. Ta make sure NO other Foreign Embassies were in any Danger.

The film was used as an excuse. No matter how offensive, that is no reason to act like animals and open themselves up for martyrdom. It appears embassy personnel were prepared for some type of negative activity on 9/11 and were not duped into making an incident out of this situation. This behavior is both primitive and ineffectual on the part of the protesters.
