Canada cuts ties with Iran, closes embassy, orders Iranian diplomats home

Most of them came here before the revolution so them and especially their children feel no connection to Iran in anyway and couldn't care less what Canada's policy stance on it is.

Canada's stance is based upon protecting it's citizenry, moreover it is there responsibility regardless of what people may or may not feel. Nevertheless, on what do you base this statement upon.

I remember hearing something about it on Q with Gian Gomeshi who is an Iranian-Canadian on CBC Radio back when a bank was discriminating against them.

Russia and China have some big choices to make! Do they want to be part of the West? If so they must seize support of nations like Iran and Syria, just dont understand Russias stance right now.

Speak English. Thank you.

You against Canadian decision? What side are you on?

Well.....not while they are under a Theocracy anyways. But do you think Cyrus The Great is Rolling over in his grave to see whats Become of the Persians?

Yes I do he was the what most believe to be the first to espouse human rights in his "Cyrus Cylinder" in circa 539.

Sorry it's late, in short I heard it on radio. I'm for Canada's decision it's one of the only things the Conservatives and Baird have done right. I was just responding to him saying:
Canada has a large Iranian population with a vested interest in good relations

Cool then. Thank you. :)

It seems Russia's offcial position is to support Iran. However, a major company "St. Petersburg-based Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS), among the top 13 global ship classification societies, had decided to suspend its activities in Iran after being urged to pull out by U.S. pressure group United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI). It is significant that Russia's leading classification society will now refuse to do business with the IRISL. Iran's friends are becoming fewer."

Yeah.....but they weren't shipping Arms and Military Tech.

I understand that, but, the mere fact that they have chosen to take this stance is a very clear sigh that Iran's friends are not as loyal to their cause as they once were.

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia — Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird has severed Canadian ties with Iran over its sponsorship of terrorism and amid fears about the safety of diplomats in the country.

Baird says the Canadian embassy in Tehran will close immediately and Iranian diplomats in Canada have been given five days to leave.

Good for them, but they sure are a little late in leaving.

Late?

Not later than the USA ... :)

Much much earlier!;)

Iran has been dealing with sanctions for years now. This is not going to affect them much.

To take a step back with such a highly charged issue is necessary. Canada has a large Iranian population with a vested interest in good relations, but, that relationship must go both ways and benefit all parties.

Indeed, "Canadians who have Iranian nationality are warned in particular that the Iranian regime does not recognise the principle of dual nationality," it said. "By doing so, Iran makes it virtually impossible for government of Canada officials to provide consular assistance to Iranian-Canadians in difficulty."

I understand....

Five key disputes Canada had with Iran that may have contributed to the diplomatic rift | News | National Post

Short rundown on the history. To me it sounds like Iran is shooting themselves in the foot. Why? What do they have to gain?

Five key disputes Canada had with Iran that may have contributed to the diplomatic

As tensions mounted, Canada took action: The Joe Clark government issued fake Canadian passports for the six diplomats, who were passed off as film-makers as they fled the country by airplane on Jan. 27, 1980. The Canadian Embassy in Tehran was soon closed, and the two countries did not return to normal diplomatic relations until 1996.

I understand that, but, the mere fact that they have chosen to take this stance is a very clear sigh that Iran's friends are not as loyal to their cause as they once were.

While that may be true......I think Russia has always known. Iran needs Russia. Russia don't need Iran. Which is why Russia is solidfiying their relationship even more with China.

Syrian Port Tartus is the last Russian military base outside the former Soviet Union.. so that may be a contributing factor for Russia's posture re: Iran and Syria.

I agree, need is fleeting and Russia has a broad interest in Iran this is was it looked like in 2011, “Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich says Russia's political and economic relations with Iran stand at a high level and continue to increase on a daily basis. It should be said that the Russian-Iranian trade turnover exceeded last year's level, reaching USD 3.65 billion,” the Russian official noted, describing energy and transportation as the most promising areas of trade and economic cooperation between the two countries."

PressTV - Iran-Russia ties at high level: Moscow

This what it looks like today, "the ties that China and Russia have with Iran are based primarily on each country's opportunistic assessment of the costs and benefits of a given relationship relative to the risk that the IRI will proliferate, threaten the flow of world oil supplies, and upset their relations with the US and other countries that oppose Iran. Both China and Russia work to gain politically and economically from the ongoing competition between the US and Iran, but do so with the knowledge that Iran can only offer a limited range of incentives compared to China and Russia’s broader strategic interests."

Iran is in a precarious position, as always

Definitely Syria......No matter what takes place with Syria. The Russians will not give up Tartus!

Already the Russians have landed a few units of Marines. They have Speznaz in already. Including a Couple of Anti-terrorism units. Plus they already had several ships sent. Then in July they sent another flotilla. Not to mention there is no counting how many subs they have in the region. They also sent a couple of mine sweepers.

"The Russian ships today passed the Strait of Gibraltar and entered the Mediterranean at 1200 GMT," said a defence ministry spokesman, quoted by Itar-Tass agency.....snip~

Report Russia to Send Marines to Syria.....
MOSCOW (AP) — Two Russian navy ships are completing preparations to sail to Syria with a unit of marines on a mission to protect Russian citizens and the nation's base there, a news report said Monday.
The deployment appears to reflect Moscow's growing concern about Syrian President Bashar Assad's future. The official said the ships will carry an unspecified number of marines to protect Russians in Syria and evacuate some equipment from Tartus, if necessary.

Each ship is capable of carrying up to 300 marines and a dozen tanks, according to Russian media reports. That would make it the largest known Russian troop deployment to Syria, signaling that Moscow is becoming increasingly uneasy about Syria's slide toward civil war.Russian officials have said that other Russian navy ships that have called at Tartus this year also had marines on board, but it has remained unclear whether they rotated the troops at Tartus or simply protected the ships during their mission and returned home.

Russia also has an unspecified number of military advisers teaching Syrians how to use Russian weapons, which make up the bulk of Syrian arsenals.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton issued a harsh reprimand of Russia last week, when she said that Moscow "dramatically" escalated the crisis in Syria by sending attack helicopters there. The State Department acknowledged later the helicopters she accused Moscow of sending were actually refurbished ones already owned by the Assad regime, but Russia was clearly annoyed, and the spat further fueled tensions ahead of President Barack Obama's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Mexico on Monday.....snip~

Russian Anti-Terror Troops Arrive in Syria

A Russian military unit has arrived in Syria, according to Russian news reports, a development that a United Nations Security Council source told ABC News was "a bomb" certain to have serious repercussions.
Russia, one of President Bashar al-Assad's strongest allies despite international condemnation of the government's violent crackdown on the country's uprising, has repeatedly blocked the United Nations Security Council's attempts to halt the violence, accusing the U.S. and its allies of trying to start another war.
Now the Russian Black Sea fleet's Iman tanker has arrived in the Syrian port of Tartus on the Mediterranean Sea with an anti-terror squad from the Russian Marines aboard according to the Interfax news agency. The Assad government has insisted it is fighting a terrorist insurgency.

The Iman replaced another Russian ship "which had been sent to Syria for demonstrating (sic) the Russian presence in the turbulent region and possible evaluation of Russian citizens," the Black Sea Fleet told Interfax.

They already had 8-9 ships over there. Now they are sending 4 more. Moreover they have helicopters. Unlike Gadhafi or Assad. The Russians won't hesitate to use them. Plus Putin has a new image to present. Including with his Military. Looks Like he has made the Initial Good Showing. As in presenting that Stiff Upper lip.....if I do say so myself.

One thing is for certain.....he is pissing Clinton and Obama off. As well as that

From Daily News & Analysis:
"Syrian rebels have threatened to attack Russia's naval base at the port of Tartous if Moscow continues to supply weapons to President Bashar al-Assad's regime.
"'We have a warning for the Russian forces: if they will send any more weapons that kill our families and the Syrian people we will hit them hard inside Syria,' said Louay al-Mokdad, a logistical coordinator for the Free Syrian Army (FSA)."

Its very complicated with justifiable and conflicting interests for the US and Russia.. and I think extremely dangerous.. I can't think of a time in the past that was quite like this.

Bibi, Assad and Amanutjob? You have to be kidding!

Lebanon is at risk.. Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey are cautious but extremely concerned.. I wouldn't be in Obama's shoes for anything.

Actually it's not to complicated at all. Seems the West has gambled that Sunni Arabs know how to conduct themselves as Democracies. IMO.....a Major Mistake!

Anyone know if Canada is backing Obama and the Syrian Situation? I mean I have heard Canada speak out about the Atorcities that Assad was committing. But I have yet to hear them say anything about the Sunni Arabs of the FSA using Children to mount offensives against Assad. Nor anything about those Christians they were massacring while playing War!

Why should the West Just give the Sunni Arabs another Country to Rule?
