Sun Myung Moon dies at 92; led controversial Unification Church

Well I guess somebody needs to post this. His gift the conservative movement is the Washington Times.

Sun Myung Moon dies at 92; led controversial Unification Church - latimes.com

The Rev. Sun Myung Moon, the self-proclaimed Messiah from South Korea who led the Unification Church, one of the most controversial religious movements to sweep America in the 1970s, has died. He was 92.

Moon, who had been hospitalized with pneumonia in August, died Monday at a hospital in Gapyeong, South Korea, church officials told the Associated Press.

Although greeted as a Korean Billy Graham when he arrived in the United States four decades ago, Moon gradually emerged as a religious figure with quite different beliefs, whose movement was labeled a cult and whose followers were mocked as "Moonies." At the height of his popularity, he claimed 5 million members worldwide, a figure that ex-members and other observers have called inflated. Those numbers are believed to have fallen into the thousands today.

Another loon bites the dust. Good riddance to him.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

Unification Church founder Rev. Moon dies

So the prophet died. Or atleast that's what he thought...

Unification Church founder Rev. Moon dies at 92

GAPYEONG, South Korea (AP) The Rev. Sun Myung Moon was a self-proclaimed messiah who built a global business empire. He called both North Korean leaders and American presidents his friends, but spent time in prisons in both countries. His followers around the world cherished him, while his detractors accused him of brainwashing recruits and extracting money from worshippers.

These contradictions did nothing to stop the founder of the Unification Church from turning his religious vision into a worldwide movement and a multibillion-dollar corporation stretching from the Korean Peninsula to the United States.

Moon died Monday at a church-owned hospital near his home in Gapyeong County, northeast of Seoul, two weeks after being hospitalized with pneumonia, Unification Church spokesman Ahn Ho-yeul told The Associated Press. Moon's wife and children were at his side, Ahn said. He was 92.

Thought I'd just make this post seeing how I've seen some of you make post religiously citing from his newspaper, the Washington Times.

Meh. Most Koreans don't know and don't care.
We're actually embarrassed that such a loony became famous.

The only time I ever gave money to wandering Jehova's Witness/Mormon/cult members was when I wrote a check to these two guys from the Moonie cult. I assumed they were Mormons because they said they were with some "________ication" church. After I gave them money, I asked them some questions and quickly realized that I had given money to a cult. I didn't want to be impolite and ask for my money back, but I felt sooooooo bad for these guys. They were maybe 20 years old, Osmond family appearance, spoke eloquently and were polite and talkative. They had moved away from their families to live halfway across the country with the other Moonies.

The weird part was that I read what the Moon cult people believe and it's not that bad, it's exactly like the Mormon church. Both are the result of an ego-maniacal guy who took Christianity, added a few arbitrary rules, and came up with a rule about marrying more than one person at the same time. And both religions are spread by young men wearing button-up shirts and slacks. But I also guess this Moon guy was a horrible dude and now that he's gone I hope the two young men will get to go home, like when you kill the head vampire and the others are immediately returned to normal.

It might be messier than that. Daddy sowed the destruction seed by switching his favour from the eldest to the youngest son. Unfortunately for the family business, elder son has several large chunks of the church's wealth in his name (for tax reasons) and is already fighting back, so much so that when he tried to visit his dying dad, the bodyguards wouldn't let him in.
