If this is the best the State Department can find to spend time on, we are in deep trouble. The Obama Adminstration should be ashamed of themselves. Someone needs to grow a backbone.
 
Um, a lot of these oddball sayings actually do have racist/sexist/whatever roots.
 
Maybe these statements have racial roots but the worst part of this is the ease with which censorship is attempted. This is an argument that has been hashed before and it is shameful that it needs to be continually rehashed. The freedom of speech was not designed to protect speech which is good and wholesome. It was designed to protect our ability to say anything whether other people like it or not. Until we reach a point where racist TALK and sexist TALK and whatever TALK stops being the story of the hour, these issues won't go away. People just need to grow thicker skins and stop worrying about what comes out of others mouths.
I also believe this about politicians. The words coming out of their mouths are a silly distraction from what these people are doing. Their actions are more important. When people act like these people are supposed to be perfect in everything they say, I want ask each and every one of them if they have said things in public that they wished they hadn't.
Why are we allowing people to censor the speech of anyone?

My boss doesn't let me shout profanity at my customers, why am I being censored :(

And in what universe is this censorship? It's an article in a magazine saying "Hey look, some of these sayings have roots that may insult people, you should think before insulting people."

Responsible language is something we should practice but when people can get in trouble for bringing up subjects that might insult someone for the sake of conversation and not leveled at anyone specific then there is a problem. Thinking about what you say is important but so is thinking about what is being heard. There are too many people reacting to a single word or phrase that a speaker is saying and not taking into consideration the entire conversation. How many times has someone taken offense to something someone said because they entered a conversation late and didn't wait to consider what the whole conversation was about?
