DEVELOPING: Multiple people were shot Friday near the Empire State building in Manhattan, the New York City Police Department confirmed to FoxNews.com.

Several people shot outside Empire state building

I read the total is 10 people shot...sigh I can hear bloombergs big mouth already..

New York City officials say several people have been shot outside the Empire State Building and that the gunman is dead.

City police say three or four civilians have been wounded in the Friday morning shooting and that the shooter is dead.

A fire department spokesman says it received a call about the shooting just after at 9 a.m. Friday and that emergency units were on the scene within minutes.

The spokesman had no information about how many people were wounded or their conditions.

The shooting occurred at 34th Street and Fifth Avenue.

Guns aren't banned in NY, it is supposed to be harder to get a permit. The truth of the matter is it doesn't matter very much how a person obtains a gun legally or illegally it will not stop people who want to kill other people.

Well, when people refer to New York, they mean New York City, and that is what I was referencing. Yes, New York state allows guns, but it's next to impossible to get one with all the red tape one must fill out. New York City bans them. I remember discussing the issue while riding a bus to Kennedy Airport, and the bus driver said he hated it because he knew that the criminals still had the guns, but John Q Citizen was virtually unarmed.

Bloomberg has been complaining a lot recently that NYC restrictions are not as effective as they should be since it's so easy to get guns elsewhere and transport them to NYC. Seems like good proof of his point, actually.

I hope everyone is ok.

I am sure die hard anti-2nd amendment loons will say how dare you turn this into something political while ignoring the numerous other times they suggested monthly gun limits, ammo limits, magazine limits and other bull**** unconstitutional suggestions when ever some sicko shoots up a place.

Just heard on the news that the gunman was fired from his job. The usual MO with somebody like this is he probably got so frustrated that he felt life wasn't worth living so he planned a group suicide with his boss and anyone who got a promotion at his expense. More than likely, he killed himself afterwards, or at least decided to try suicide by cop.

Bloomberg and his latest declarations don't have much credence. What's his latest? Ban baby formula and only breastfeed babies?

I certainly wouldn't defend him generally.

Maybe they should ban guns.... harder. Or something.

I'd say the OP and a couple of the comments from other are politisizing this. Many people tried to exploit the Colorado (and other) shootings as a political tool to promote their ideology about gun control laws......now you guys are turning this into the same just from the opposite view.

Well, the thread's been open an hour, and no anti-2nd amendment loon has done so. Didn't take long for conservatives to politicize the thread though, that was taken care of in the OP. So in the battle of hypocrisy, you guys appear to have won this time.

It'll be interesting to see what the gunman's suspected motivations were, and how those motivations are distorted by the extreme ideologues.

From Evil Fox news "A law enforcement source told Fox News that the gunman, described as security guard, was a disgruntled employee who was fired Thursday from his job at a location either inside the Empire State Building or near it."
Maybe the guy had a permit for the weapon.

According to this, one person was fatally wounded before the cops shot the gunman.

CNN quoted witnesses as saying the incident apparently started when a man chased another man and pulled out a weapon, described as looking like a sawed-off shotgun, and opened fire. An unarmed security guard in charge of elevators inside the Empire State Building then ran out and pursued the gunman while calling for help, CNN said.

Police quickly joined the chase and shot the gunman three times, CNN reported, quoting witnesses.

Maybe it's just because the media is paying more attention to it right now, but does it seem to anyone else like there have been a LOT of mass shootings recently?

The report I just heard on the radio said he was a women's accessories designer and was laid off a year ago. They also said one other person was killed and 9 injured, some possibly by police gunfire. Sure hope the person who died (besides the gunman) wasn't shot by a cop. Sounds like they need to disarm the police. They seem to be every bit as reckless as the shooter.
